Can Netbackup backup a Sybase Anywhere Database?

Background:

Have a custom application running Sybase Anywhere (the free version) in the backend.

NBU DB agent PDF talks about Sybase ASA but not about Sybase Anywhere  - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH126904

Can Netbackup backup a Sybase Anywhere Database?

Thanks,

ESM

  • The NetBackup Sybase agent only supports Sybase ASE, but not Sybase SQL Anywhere (ASA).

ASE and SQL Anywhere are different products.

To backup SQL Anywhere, you will have to use pre and post scripts to shutdown or put in to backup mode the dbs during backups; or the DBA could dump the dbs to the file system for NetBackup to pick up as normal files.

As a side note, NetBackup uses SQL Anywhere for its dbs internally, and uses PostgreSQL for its deduplication dbs.
Ironically, NetBackup does not have built-in agent support for neither, but for PostgreSQL, NetBackup does support using a Zmanda middleware for backup. Same goes for MySQL.
