Changing VCenter Servers....Need to reconfigure VCB?

Hello,

My company is changing out the VCenter servers. We currently utilize a VCB Server for VMWare flash backups.

What configuration changes do I need to make in order to keep backups working correctly?

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I seriously doubt that VCB is supported with VCenter 5.5. So, not sure why you say '...company is not in a position to retire the VCB at this point.' ?

NBU has dropped support for VCB because VMware has dropped support for VCB.

As per NetBackup 7.5.0.x for VMware Administrator's Guide http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5605
Support for VCB in NetBackup 7.5.x
For NetBackup 7.5 environments (master server, media server, and backup host all at 7.5 or later), VCB backups are not supported. VCB backups are supported only when the backup host (NetBackup client) is 7.1 or earlier. For VCB-based backups with 7.1 or earlier backup hosts, you can use the FlashBackup-Windows
policy type as described in the NetBackup for VMware Administrator's Guide, version 7.1 or 7.0.

VCB restores are still supported for 7.5 clients, but will be discontinued in a future release.

NetBackup will discontinue all VCB support in a future release. Upgrading to vStorage is recommended.

Please start with Chapter 1 of this manual and read up about VMware vStorage and how the backup process is off-loaded from the ESX server to a VMware backup host and 'Upgrade guidelines for the VMware policy type'.

  • What is your vCentre and NBU version? VCB is no longer supported. If we know your NBU version, we can provide the link to NBU for VMware manual for your version.
  • Hello,

Thanks for your responses. I understand VCB is discontinued and not supported in netbackup 7.5 (our current setup). However, for several reasons my company is not in a position to retire the VCB at this point.

We are using VCenter 5.5 and switching to new hardware. Do I need to reconfigure VCB to point to the new hardware? Again I understand this is not best practice and not supported, but right now my company is not in a position to retire the VCB server.

    Please let me know, thanks.
