Cross Platform Restore

Hi Experts,

Can we restore windows flat files to linux system or vice versa ?

Thanks,

  • Yes, but if the operating system can make sense of them is another thing ...

  • You can restore Unix / linux files on windows but there are issues the other way around. The main issue is when a windows file is backed up the acl information is appended to bigining of the file and when recovering this on Unix /linux you get a file with additional data which needs to be "trimed" in order to be able to use the file. The windows client handles this information differently to the unix/linux client so the same file restored to both clients is a different size!!!! To make it even more interesting the amount of additional information is a variable length.
  • Yes, there has been some forum threads about this ( you can search around).

Due to the OS difference, you may notice the permission or credential could be messed around.

However, it is not supported if you bring the end result (any inconsistency of restored data) to the Netbackup support team.

In addition, it's not supported if the backup type is NDMP: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56562
