granular recovery

Exchange 2010 sp3

i noticed in my Exchange backup policies, the vendor didn't select the "enable granular recovery" for backup of my mailbox servers.

is there a particular reason why? like performance or space issues?

should i enable it?

  • i would like to add, if i do enable "granular recovery" should the policy type be changed from "MS-Windows" to "MS-Exchange-Server"?

  • If your policy is currntly set to MS-Windows then it is not backing up your Exchange environment just the Operating System / Programs etc.

To back up Exchange as an application you need an additional MS-Exchange-Server policy.

As Marianne says, if you want to use GRT then you need to back up to disk of some sort, have NFS install all round and meet all other pre-requisites .. so not as simple as just ticking the granular box i am afraid.

  • Exchange admins has often 30 days or more of deleted mail in the Exchange system,  eliminating the need of GRT backup.

  • i have PureDisk and backups are going to disk first then dedup to tape storage.

i'm recovering the whole database now just to recover those deleted emails.

thank you all i'm checking the links provided.

  • Then I would ask the Exchange admin why there not using the built function to recover deleted mails.

The disk space usage will increase a bit, but that should be saved by freeing up yore time.
