HP MSL4048 Fibre Channel Tape Library not backing up

We have recently purchased an HP MSL4048 tape library to use with Netbackup 6.5.5. I have the library configured and I can see the library and drives in Netbackup but when the backup job runs it loads the tape in the drive but it never backs up anything. It eventually errors out. I used robtest and everything is good. I used the HP tape tools and everything tests out fine there to. I have the tape drives directly connected to an HBA (no switch involved). Any ideas why this wouldn't work? Thank you.

  • W2008 32 or 64-bit? Only 64-bit is supported as NBU server.
Best to download the latest tape drives specific for LTO4 from HP web site.
Also check that Removable Storage Manager Sevice is stopped and set to disabled. This service 'fights' NetBackup for device control.
Also confirm that you have the latest Device Mappings installed:

Just for interest sake - what error code are you getting when "It eventually errors out"?

Ensure you have bptm log directory for troubleshooting purposes. Also add VERBOSE entry to ...\Veritas\volmgr\vm.conf and then restart NBU Device Management service. This will increase device level logging to Event Viewer System and Application log.

  • Which O/S? We first need to confirm that the tape drives are usable at O/S level. What model tape drives?
  • The tape drives are HP LTO4 drives. We are using Windows 2008. I can see that a device driver is loaded and they work fine with the HP Tape tools.
