Migration NBU

Good afternoon,

I would need to confirm if I can perform the following migration, and hardware catalog, with the following characteristics:

Current platform:

Sparc V440, Solaris 9, NBU 5.1 (master / media)

STK L180 robotic library with IBM LTO2 FC drives

New Platform:

T4-2 Sparc, Solaris 10, NBU 7.x (master / media), I will be 7.5

SL3000 robotic library with IBM drives LTO5 / LTO4 FC

LTO4 drives would use to restore old LTO2 tapes. The LTO5 for new backups.

Finally, compatibility of agents and clients NBU between these versions

My first concern is about the viability of the migration of the catalog and activation of licenses.

Another important point is the migration and redesign of existing backup policies, any recommendation?

The second on the operation of LTO4 drives for LTO2 restores, which according to manual is viable, but would need to know if they have specific experience in this.

thank you very much

regards

  • This will have to be a phased upgrade because of OS compatibility (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH59978 ):

    On Solaris 9 master:

Upgrade to NBU 6.5. See http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH52753

Ensure all is working properly for a week or so.

Prepare new Solaris 10 server with same hostname and same 6.5 NBU.

Use info in TN http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448   to use hot catalog backup and restore to migrate catalogs to new server.

After this migration to new server, you can start with preparation to upgrade to 7.5 : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH74584

About LTO2 media and LTO4 drives: YES, it works, but this can get tricky/confusing.

NBU default densities for LTO drive types are as follows:

    LTO1 - hcart
    LTO2 - hcart2
    LTO3 - hcart3
    LTO4 - hcart
    LTO5 - hcart2

Next, to allow mounts of certain media type in the drives, the media density in NBU must match the density of the drive, regardless of different media types and drives that are compatible at hardware level.

Now, if you allow NBU defaults and follow above steps to migrate catalogs, all of your old LTO2 tapes will be type hcart2 and your new LTO5 drives and media will also be hcart2 - NOT GOOD!!

So, when you add the LTO5 drives and media, you should manually change it to a different density (hcart or hcart3) and create barcode rules to automatically add the LTO5 media to match the drive density.

Add LTO4 drives as hcart2 to match density of LTO2 tapes.

Your alternative is to start fresh on the new master with latest 7.5 software and start importing all old tapes.... or keep old system around for restores (depending on retention levels).

  • In a word, No.

You can only restore NBU to the same version.

I would recommend upgrading your 5.1 system to 7.5, then migrate.

This is a guide to planning migration

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448

You cannot upgrade from 5.1 to 7.x, you have to upgrade to 6.5 first, then from 6.5 to 7.5

This contains everything to upgrade from 5.1 - 6.5

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH52785

and this from 6.5 to 7.x

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH74584

To go from 5.1 to 6.5 is more complex as the databases on the media server(s) are migrated in to the EMM DB, I would recommend logging a call to get the NBCC run on the 5.1 system

    Regards,

  • OK, thanks in advance for your help!!

There is a lot of work to do....

    Good bye

    Javier

  • could be the fresh installation and import, the best way to do this...

Could be better if we leave a LTO2 installed on the SL3000 for the import and then we use a new LTO4 only for old restores, removing the LTO 2  of the platform?

    Thanks

    Javier

  • Hi, thanks in advance for your help

    Here another option:

I will do a new fresh instalation NBU 7.5 with new SL3000 and new master server.

It be possible to import  previous media, backed up with another master server with NBU 5x and restore it with the new 7.5?

    Thanks

  • Yes, old tapes can be imported and be restored from.

Imports can become 'tricky' if you don't know which tapes hold the backups that you need. If backup spanned multiple tapes, you will need to perform phase 1 import of all tapes in the backup set before you can start with phase 2 import. Difficult task if you don't know which tapes formed backup set...

Best to keep old server around to identify images and tapes that are needed for imports.

  • Excellent idea, the old server is available to identify the images.

Them go for the new / fresh option

    thank you very much

    best regards
