NB 6.5.5: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Hi@ll,

I got some error-messages vor different clients, different media-servers, different drives and different tapes:

21:59:43.816 [5084.4436] <16> io_ioctl: ioctl (MTFSF) failed on media id R10694, drive index 17, Data error (cyclic redundancy check). (23) (bptm.c.7201)

21:59:43.910 [5084.4436] <2> check_error_history: just tpunmount: called from bptm line 23967, EXIT_Status = 86

What can be the reason for this error-messages?

TIA

Dirk

  • Status code 86 indicate a "media position error".

    See :

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH56460&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US&searchid=1285139601526

I often see media position errors on worn-out LTO drives or drives that badly need a cleaning tape. Another reason for status code 86 is a previous status code 84.

My advise: use cleaning tape, suspend media with status code 86 (use the GUI)

  • Bad media is the cause in most cases.

  • Hi,

    thanks for your answer.

The HP-Support told us LTO-4-Drives don´t need cleanings. If we have any problem with a drive we will change it with a new one.

I´m wondering, because we get this error-messages dayly for different hardware (tapes, drives, media-servers).

  • HI Wrobbins,

because that will increase the profit :-)
They sold us 100 cleaning cartridges with two libraries. After they told us that LTO4 drives don´t need cleanings they rebought most of them.

  • A log of design has been put into the LTO series to reduce the need to cleaning tapes (e.g internal cleaning brush). However our local StorageTek/SUN/Oracle rep. recommend to use a cleaning tape once a month - and we use our drives at least 14 hour every day.
