operating system backup

Question: What is running on those systems? What kind of application and/or database?

Operating system can be backed up with ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES directive in backup selection, but this is not recommended for up and running databases.

NetBackup has various agents for databases. Recommendation is to use agent backups for databases.
In that instance, OS backup can still backup ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES, but with exclude_list added on client to exclude folders that contain databases.

To answer the question:

Create a policy in NBU.

Add the client to this policy

Add the directive ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES in the policy.

Perhaps use exclude list if there are filesystems you don't wnat to backup.

Effect on running  system - slightly more I/O whilst the backup is running.  If system is built well and not overloaded, you shouldn'd really noitce this.

 

 

To minimise effect, you could use a Full backup when the machine is not to busy (overnight perhaps or weekend) and then use incrementals during the week to only backup the changes.

You could also use synthetic backups to make a full from the incremetals (adds tyhem tother) with really running a full.  It's neat, but a bit more complex.

hi,

first i want to Explaine something

all what i want is to find Method in Netbackup to take operating system backup image and then use bare metal restore it to any linux machine  ... ( something like ghost image in windows)

Now ,i am studing  a tool called bacula to do this task , but if i found any Method in NB 7.0.1 to do this better is ok

 

in the past i used to take data backup and archive using Symantec NB 7.0.1 , now i want to take system backup of machines (linux redhat , AIX, hp-ux)

 

 

NetBackup has an add-on product called BMR.  This will do exactly what you want.
