Standalone Tapes

Hello Experts,

We are running out of the tapes on one IBM3500 library. Tapes expire on this library on its own and then we reuse it we dont offsite these tapes.

I checked in Standalone and I could see there are many tapes which are in Active MPX as media status and these tapes are showing data expiration

dates past few months. I dont know why.

These are in showing unassinged in IBM3500 library.

So can I use this tapes and expire these as these are showing back dates expiration dates? Is there any issue using these?

Please help.

  • Do you have a lot of frozen media?

  • Hi Sdo,

    Thanks for your response.

Actualy these are not frozen tapes. May be somebody had unassinged these tapes while these were still being used as active.

From unassinged I mean from library console.

So can I assign these and use these after manually expiring the data as these are showing past dates?

We have to manually expire the media as issue is still persistent in our environment after the expiration date is over.

  • My advice would be... before expiring or changing anything, let's try to understand the problem.

    Can you show:

    bpmedialist -summary

    vmpool -list_all -bx

...and then for one of the problem/issue/locked media, do:

    bpmedialist -m MYMEDIAID -L

    vmquery -m MYMEDIAID

  • Need to see drive types too:

  • Hi Sdo,

This case has been pending with Symantec for media not getting expired they are still unable to troubleshoot it.

So my question is if any tape is showing back date data expiration date and is in Active MPX so is it safe to expire these?

  • Back date expiration date is fine to expire.

  • What happens when you issue this command? bpexpdate -deassignempty -verbose
  • I am wondering about your Support call with Veritas and why they are unable to troubleshoot... Are you also equally unwilling to provide info or output as here on Connect? You have simply ignored each request for command output. And not only in this post...
