Hi All, We have one of the Oracle/Sun SL500 connected to one of our Solaris 10 media server. We have 18 drivers in total out of which 14 are LTO3 and 4 are LTO4 drives We recently had 9 of our drives failed due to bad media supply and they were replaced. We added the new drives by following http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH34296 There is a serial number mismatch for 10 LTO3 drivrs. The serial numbers in SL Console ( Sun Library Console) and NetBackup admin console are different. The backups are working fine with mismatched serial numbers but my question is when backups are working fine why serial numbers are not updated in netbackup. Please guide.

Although everything is held within EMM these days i have seen the media server itself keep its own record and pass that back to netbackup too.

Worth running tpautoconf -t on each media server to see what it says it has and then do a tidy up locally on each media server and see if that sorts it for you

HI Anurag,

Login to those media servers wher you can find the drives are showiing the error.

Get the output of below commands from the media server.

Vmoprcmd -dp

Scan

tpautoconf -t

Change the mismatch drives with the below command

tpautoconf -replace_drive drive_name -path drive_path

Was the robot restarted/IPL'ed after drives were replaced?

We need to compare what the robot sees and reports vs actual serial numbers (reported by tpautoconf -t on media servers).

Is SL500 controlled via TLD or ACSLS?

If TLD, please show us output of 'scan -changer' on the robot control host.

If ACSLS, show us output from ACSSA prompt on ACSLS server:
ACSSA> display drive *,*,*,* -f type serial_num

The serial numbers that the robot reports in 'scan' output do not match the 'tpautoconf -t' output.

Best to reboot/IPL the robot as well as reconfig devices at OS level on the Solaris server.

So, after reboot of the library, check that robot display window and 'scan' reports correct/same serial numbers.

Then, cleanup and recreate device entries at OS level:
'devfsadm -C -c tape'

Read up about Persistent Binding for the HBA that is used in this server and ensure that it has been done to prevent OS devices names to change when server is rebooted. (The high number of device entries in /dev/rmt says to me that Persistent Binding may not be in place.)

When you are sure that the robot and 'scan' sees the same serial numbers, confirm that NBU sees all the tape drives with 'sgscan'.

If not, rebuild sg entries as follows:

# cd /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sg.build all -mt <15> -ml <1>

Install the new sg driver configuration:

# /usr/bin/rm -f /kernel/drv/sg.conf
# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/driver/sg.install

Check/verify config:

# /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/sgscan

Once sgscan sees the robot and tape drives, delete existing tape drives in NBU, then run Device Config wizard.

Marianne,

I could dod the steps you listed. However if I do that I would have to recreate all the SLPs and all the media manager storage units.

Is there a way that can be avoided.

SLP's use Storage Units.

There is no need to recreate STU's. Just device config.
The wizard will prompt for STU config. Quit after Device config.

You may want to double-check STU config afterwards to ensure that it matches the Device config (e.g. robot number, density, etc).
