VM Snapshot taking time

We have a VMWARE(4.1 ESX) farm to backup having hurndred of VM's , we are using SAN to do the backup.

Problem is for every VM it takes 15 minutes to do the snapshot, for that 15 minutes it locks up the tape drive as it allocated by NBRB for backup.

Is there any way where in this 15 minutes to lesser value, appriciate guidence on this.

  • the snapshot was actaully perfrome by Vcenter/ESXi..

so first check how much time its taking when you start the snapshot directly from Vcenter/ESXi

if its also taking 15 min time.. you probalby need to check with Vmware team on it..

what kind of data hosting in VMs?  is that Database  or application?

  • We donot do VMWARE agent backups for database VM's, most of VM's are used application servers.

Thanks for pointer to ESX, i will catch hold of support guy to test it out.

  • Hmm, person who manages ESX also says it takes 10-15 minutes to do the sanpshot.

Is this the same every where,I am confused.

  • Nope it is not the case.. that is depends on how VMware enviornment is build and working..

as taking the same time for regular VM Snapshots.. there is nothing you can do in Netbackup level...

if you do what to have the 15 dealy.. ask  your Vmware team to tune the VMware enviornment to get this reduced.

    Good Luck
