Disk group import failed vxvm 5.1

Hi

Is there any way to downgrade Vxdg version.

Actually I did upgrade vxdg version on VxVM 5.1 but couldn't upgrade the file system from version 5 to Version 7. so I uninstalled vxvm and installed vxvm 5.0.

I can see all the dgs which I didn't upgrade  when I was on VxVM 5.1.

I can see those dgs as a deported  and when I am trying to import the disk I am getting the error.

Disk group has no valid configuration copies.

Would really appreciate if anyone could help me.

Thanks

  • Hi Sukrut

I just read through your previous post again: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/vxfs-version-5

Did you not try the patch mentioned in the post marked as Solution?

    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH78028

If impacted by this situation, contact Symantec Support and request the following patch:

     Hotfix 1 for File System 5.1RP1   ( VxFS 5.1RP1HF1 )

The VxFS 5.1RP1HF1 patch is cumulative and can be applied to any patch level VxFS5.1 installation (5.1, 5.1P1, 5.1RP1).  Following patch application file systems can be upgraded using the following procedure:

    # mount -F vxfs /dev/vx/dsk/diskgroup/volume /mountpoint
    # vxupgrade -n 5 /mountpoint  (for version 4 file systems)
    # vxupgrade -n 6 /mountpoint
    # vxupgrade -n 7 /mountpoint

  • little unclear on what you are saying...

so some DGs you upgraded & some DG's were not upgraded.... can u imported the un-upgraded DGs well in 5.0 ? & you are getting error on diskgroup which you upgraded.. ? is that right ?

Regarding DG downgrade, there are steps however those are not recommended, an actual DG downgrade will follow recreate of DG & restoring from CBR backup, would highly recommend to have data backup beforehand...

  • Hello Sukrut,

Veritas volume manager offers you to upgrade the diskgroup version to latest with each latest version. Once you upgrade the diskgroup version to latest, you can not import the diskgroup on lower version of vxvm. Also you can not downgrade or revert the old diskgroup version. The diskgroup version is one way traffic, only allows you to upgrade.

Having said so, I still believe you data is intact and you can get it by rebuilding the diskgroup again at lower version of vxvm as mentioned in Gaurav's post.

    I hope it helps

  • Hi Surkut,

Once DG version is upgraded, we cannot downgrade it. Only option is to destroy and recreate the

DG with older version. This can be done without any data loss, but would prefer our support before

    doing so.
