Backups stoping mid flow asking for new media

Hi

We are having a problem backing up several servers.

The system has worked ok for ages but suddenly we have got this error.

Half way through a backup the system waits for a prompt with the error message “Please insert over writable media into the robotic library using the import command.”

The problem is that the tape is only half full and ok, if the system fails backing up server B, we reboot server B and then the next day the system fails on server C and so on.

If we reboot our whole server system (6 servers) the backup runs ok every night for a couple of days and then starts with the same error.

 

We do full back up every night  with a  robot system and it has worked ok.

The size of the backups are below the max limit of the tapes.

    Hi there,

     

    What sort of compression are you getting on your tapes? This might affect the backup run if you're all-of-a-sudden not backing up onto 1 tape as in the past.

    Is your media server fully patched, and are you running the latest DDI package for your drive? Lastly, check the Devices tab within BE and make sure there are no Hard Write Errors on the drive...if there are, download your drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility and run it against the drive after stopping the BE services. This will check for any errors, and if they are reported, it becomes a hardware issue instead of a BE issue.

    Tapes can be a problem, but only if they're really old and are also showing errors being constantly written to them.

    If your job is set to append to the tape, then the data that is already on the tape is not overwritten and you have to account for this.

    OK, ive updated Backup exec but the problem is still there.

    The job that we have does not fill the tape so i cannot see it being that the tape has run out of space.

    This is happening to all our weekly jobs that backup up to diffrent tapes each night.

    If i reboot the server that the backup is stuck on, the next night it will do that server but fail on the next server in line and so on.

    Is there a update to the clients on the servers.

    Hi

     

    There is no as such liveupdate to client server but then whenever you install any updates or patches on Media server it is Imporatant to push those updates on Client server. So that beremote version would remain same on media server & remote server too

    Hi,

     

    Might be time to check out your tape drive with your hardware vendor's diagnostic tools. This should be done in order to rule out hardware issues.
