Exchange Backups

When I backup Exchange 2003 I'll select the following components in my backup job:

Exchange Mailboxes
Exchange Public Folders
Information Store

Please let me know if selecting these three is enough (or possibly overkill).

Any advice is much appreciated.

  • In view of the query put forward, we would like you to refer the following technote link which would give you a detail explaination of items that have to be backed up while considering Backups of Exchange 2003.

    1) Title:- Is backing up Exchange Mailboxes equivalent to backing up the Exchange Information Store?

    http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/231250.htm

    2) Title:- How to protect Exchange 2000 and 2003 servers using the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Exchange Agent

    We hope this helps.
  • Technically it is overkill, but it is what I and most others do. However, seperate your Information Store backup from the Mailbox/Public Folder one. Mailbox backups are much slower than an Information Store backup due to MAPI issues. You will make your total backup window more manageable by seperating them into two jobs.

The Information Store is the one you absolutely must backup, the mailbox backups make it easier to restore individual items, but you cannot restore exchange from a mailbox backup.
