How do I configure a backup on a SQL cluster

I'm rather new at backing up clusters so I hope this isn't a stupid question.
Presently I have Backup Exec 10d installed.
I have two Windows Server 2003 servers clustered running SQL 2005. I have a virtual server that allows me to connect via remote desktop and when I do connect i automaticaly get the server that is running as the master. However I do not see the virtual server listed in my remote selections I only see the two sql servers themselves.

Will BE 10d work with SQL 2005?
What is the correct way to setup a cluster environment for backup to a robotic library?

  • Firstly I'll assume you're using an MSCS cluster rather than a VCS cluster.
Now you SHOULD see the virtual server name listed in your remote selections. If not, then the cluster server is not registering its name properly. You might be able to connect to your virtual IP address.
The next thing is that when you browse the virtual server name (you haven't got thtis far yet though!), the BE remote agent tries to detect whether you are browsing the cluster node name or the virtual server name, and it will only show the cluster resources if you are browsing the virtual server name. That's the theory - for me, using a VCS cluster, it doesn't work properly.
The correct way to back it up is that you should browse your remote selection list, and add the local drives and system state of the server nodes, and the shared drives and SQL databases of the virtual server.
