Restore exchange 2003 to different server...

Yes I know how the recovery store works.  Unfortunately I'm lacking space to do a restore on that particular server. What I've did was built a new exchange server to do a restore to but unfortunately it doesn't work. Is there anyway to restore to a different server? Ideally it should be doable but I can't figure it out and googling hasn't gotten me any answers.

I wonder if pluggin in a USB drive and redirecting the RG store to the usb drive on original exchange server would take care of the problem above....
