Best solution to back up Citrix Xen Server
Hello, I am wondering what the best solution would be for the following: I have on Citrix Xen Server host that has 7 virtual machines on it. I am currently using PHD Virtual to back this up to a NAS. I am looking to move to different software for the backups. One of the virtual machines is running SQL and one is running AD and DNS. There is also one physical server that has AD, DNS, and DHCP on it that i would also like to back up in the same solution. What i was curious about is what is the best way to back all of this up? Is it Back Up Exec or System Restore? Or would neither work? I am looking for something that will back up to the existng NAS and allow for item level restores as well as fast restores of full VM's if ever needed. Second question is, assuming one of the two products will work is it best practice to install it on its own server or could it be installed on teh physical that is existing with AD, DNS and DHCP? I am assuming its own server and that is what i would shoot for, but for the sake of saving money i like to know my options. Thank you for your assistance.Solved1.2KViews0likes2CommentsSSR-MS201110.0.2 Some of Client cannot Install License key From server

I've recently downloaded the trial of Backup Exec System Recovery 2010. We are currently using BE 11d and 12.5 for our existing physical servers, with SQL agents, and Sharepoint agents mixed in. The reason I'm trying BESR 2010 is because we just got involved in VMs, using Citrix XenServer. BE doesnt seem to restore to VMs very nicely from what we've seen or experienced, so I wanted to give BESR a try. I like that it is a more simple of an interface, resembling Ghost products. I've backuped and restored a test VM or two and it seems to work fine. I also like how the backup data that writes to disk can be compressed. Its a time saver for when I want to write backups to tape. Now that I've got VMs backing up using this, I want to explore how this handles backing up Sharepoint and SQL. In BE there are agents needed. Are there agents needed for BESR? I see blurbs that you can do granual backups of Exchange and Sharepoint, but I can't really seem to find detailed documentationon setting this up and/or doing restores (Sharepoint/SQL mainly) Should I shy away from this product for those purposes? Should someone be combining products, or can one do everything? ...p.s. One More quick question... I'm using my trial of BESR 2010 to backup our domain controllers which are VM's. I'm guessing if I needed to do a full restore of one of my 2 DC's, I would be fine... but if I wanted to restore individual AD items... I would not be able to, correct?400Views0likes1CommentBESR 2010 restore on SBS 2008 computer name change
Hello Support, Thanx for all the help i've received in this forum. i really apreciate you all. i really need help now. i have installed BESR 2010 when it was newly released (version 9.0.0 2----- not sure exactly) and i was able to restore the recovery points i created on Windows 2003 and 2008 server and Windows 7 on desktops and laptops. I don't really have the BESR download any longer because i deleted the file last moth when i downloaded the latest version 9.0.1 36527. Installing this version and creating a recovery point on an SBS 2008 server and Windows 2008 servers for a client. To be used in the event of a disaster. i get the following display at logon "The security database on the server does not have a computer account for this workstation trust relationship". I cannot login to the SBS server using the domain credentials. I get a .\Administrator (this obviously wants a local administrator password which i don't have on the DC). I can only login to the SBS server using the domain credentials from safe mode. I try the file server and other servers on the network which also have their recovery points created and restored. i get the same login to local computer. Though on these other servers i can login using the domain credentials, but i notice that the computer names for all of the servers have changed. I was not getting this situation when i had the very first version of BESR 2010. It is strange because i checked one of the recovery points i have from the old version and i see there is a System Reserved drive (about 100MB) created. i tested a restore using this recovery point and the computer name is not changed. This updated BESR 2010 does not have any System Reserved drive created. I really want to know why the computer names have changed. I do not intend to connect these restored servers to the network to avoid IP address conflicts. I do not also intend to change the computer names as the original computers still exist on the domain. I hope i have not bored you with my note. i contacted some friends and they wanted to know if i had used VSS during the recovery point. This i did while creating the recovery point. I also tested with manually starting the VSS service before creating another one. Is there any document to specify step by step what need s to be done before i create the recovery point to avoid a computer name change? Also to aid in logging on to this SBS 2008 restored server? I will be very grateful if i can get a response. I noticed some other users have encountered similar issue with the computer name change, yet no response has been forth coming in resolving this. thank you so very much.Solved1.4KViews0likes7Comments
