Hi, I have installed Backup Exec 2014 with SP1 on a Windows 2008R2 server that hosts Symantec Enterprise Vault 10.0.4. In Backup Exec, I see 'two' servers listed, the Windows server itself (drives C & D, System State, and SQL server, only the Microsoft supplied DBs, not any Vault DBs), as well as the Directory, which contains the Vault Site, the Vault SQL DBs, and the Vault Index locations. I am looking for a way to backup both 'servers' together in 1 backup. I have an LTO5 tape drive that easily holds all of the data to be backed up. As far as I can see, I can only backup each server separately. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike RydzewskiSolved1.2KViews2likes3CommentsBackup Exec 2012 Enterprise Vault SLOW

Hi All, I've recently set up Enterprise Vault 11, and I'm now trying to get it backed up using Backup Exec 2014. Specifically, I'm having an issue with browsing the SQL Databases via the Directory for <server name> in BE2014. See below: I've tried setting the job up with a Domain Admin account which has appropriate SQL permissions, and server permissions, as well as trying the Vault Service account, but no joy with either. Is there any documentation to clarify what permissions I need to set up to allow Backup Exec 2014 to backup the EV 11 Directory? Of specific documentation for creating a backup job for Enterprise Vault in BE2014. The BE2014 Admin Guide doesn't seem to go in to this detail. We are using Backup Exec 2012 v14.0.1798 (64-bit) on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 via NDMP job to backup our Enterprise Vault 10.x MailPartitions which are hosted on a NetApp device. We are backing up SQL and Enterprise Vault with Veeam backup. In order to resolve conflicts, we removed the Backup Exec agent from our Enterprise Vault server after reading through support articles. The problem is that Backup Exec is not creating the Partition Secured Notification.xml file now. Our understanding was that it was the backup server software that created this file, not the agent. Since using NDMP in combination with Veeam and removing the backup exec agent our backups are now less than two hours, down from 10+ hours. How do we get Backup Exec to utilize the Partition Secured Notification process? TECH35610 does not help me and quite frankly does not make sense to me. I would like to see a well written How To or Best Practicein utilizing both the Partition Secured Notification and Ignore Archive Bit Trigger process. This article also does not help http://dailyvmtech.wordpress.com/2012/10/23/backing-up-symantec-enterprise-vault-with-veeam-backup-replication/ Help on this matter is greatly appreciated.Solved725Views1like1CommentHow to properly backup Enterprise Vault with agents
Since we got Enterprise Vault, backups have been a pain. I've really wanted to focus on getting them correct, and have spent the last few days making changes, doing test backups. Seems like when I fix one issue, another arises. So I need some help! Here's the enviornment. I've got 2 Enterprise Vault servers, EV1 (pretty much does everything)and EV2 (only Discovery Accelerator) and both servers have their databases on SQL1 (only EV databases). All servers are virtual, and we have all the proper agents. Running EV 10.0.4 and BE 2012 SP3. Typically we run daily incrimental backups, with fulls on Saturdays. Problems that I am having are mostly with SQL backups. Either it complains that no transaction logs are backed up, or that some other application has already backed up the database, so changes are now out of sync. According to Symantec's best practice, all the databases of EV should be set to recovery mode Full. The EV Agent jobs don't allow me to tweak any SQL stuff. Theres no SQL section, so I have to do that elsewhere, but then I get the errors about something else backing up the databases. I also have AVVI backups of these servers, but have learned that having them set to GRT backups will disrupt SQL backups, so I've got that turned off for the AVVI backup of SQL1. Without getting too crazy detailed in the description with my backups - can someone give a suggestion here? I know backups without the EV agent are more painful, but EV agent backups should be easier than this! Thanks in advance!1.3KViews1like5CommentsEnterprise Vault Backup Job Freezes!
After upgrading to Enterprise Vault v9.0.3 (from v9.0.2), the Enterprise Vault job running on Backup Exec 2010 R3 (v13.0 Rev 5204 Hotfixes 108429 and 176937) now hangs / stalls either whilst backing up the EVPublicFoldersVS Store, or sometimes when initially placing the first EV entities into backup mode. Previously to the EV upgrade, the job was running successfully with no errors. When it hangs, the job will not cancel and the Backup Exec services have to be restarted in order to clear the job. Restarting the Backup Exec Enterprise Vault Agent also does not allow the job to be cancelled. Unusually there are no errors logged in the failed job report (other than that the RPC was terminated due to the services restart). There are similarly no errors logged in the Event Viewer on either the Backup Exec or Enterprise Vault servers. According to the logs, the job appears to be bringing the various vaults in and out of backup mode as expected. However, the job appears to stall as if it is waiting for something to respond / signal for it to continue. The Enterprise Vault Agent is up to date with the Backup Exec Server build. The environment is a single Backup Exec Media Server connected to an HP MSL4048 LTO3 Library. Enterprise Vault is running as a Virtual Machine in vSphere 5.0. I have tried re-installing the Backup Exec Agent on the EV server, and re-creating the selection list and associated job. Other jobs running on the server include a SQL, File and Exchange backup, all of which are running fine and completing normally. A search of the Symantec Knowledge Base does not seem to yield any similar issues with the same characteristics.2.5KViews1like16CommentsEV10 Indexes fail to backup
Hi, Looking at a customer's EV setup. EV 10.0.0.1316 BE2010 R2 Win 2008 R2 installed on the EV server, SQL DB's also locally on the same server EV incrementals during the week, full backup at the weekend, job uses the EV agent Job fails with "Final error: 0xe0009502 - Backup Exec cannot place the Enterprise Vault vault stores or index locations into backup mode. Ensure that the selection is valid for a backup operation, and then try the job again." And the detailed errors will show all the Index locations The indexes are not in backup mode before the job starts, application log doesn't show any attempt to set the indexes into backup mode, but after the job fails, they are in backup mode?! I've confirmed the Backup Exec account has the rights to set indexes and vaults into backup mode (vaults backup fine in the same job), BE credentials test also passes. If I remove the Indexes selection from the job, it completes successfully Server/services restarted, same fault found. Prior to running test backups, I've restarted the index service, made sure no errors logged and nothing is set to backup mode, still fails the backup on the indexes. Anything else I should be looking at? ThanksSolved715Views1like3CommentsEnterprise Vault Agent
Environment: BE2012 SP1a EV 10.0 SQL 2008 R2 Problem: The BackupExec service hangs (and the job says "stalled") after the databases for the vault stores are backed up. The actual vaults are on a NAS so they are de-selected. I created a job to JUST back up the vault store databases - this is where I have isolated the issue. So, this is what happens: Vault stores are put in backup mode properly (from EV server event logs) Vault store database are backed up (from SQL server event logs) Vault stores exit backup mode properly (from EV server event logs) The job hangs as soon as the vault store exits backup mode, goes to stall, tries to recover, stalls, etc, etc. If there were other jobs running when this happens they are all failed (bad). Spoke with Symantec, got tossed between EV and BE engineers repeatedly. Was told my tape rotation was not optimal and that we needed to turn off antivirus (neither of which did anything). So, is anyone running the EV agent successfully? Anyone running the EV agent with the vault stores on a NAS? The actual vault stores get backed up via NDMP (in backup mode with some powershell scripting to put them into backup mode) successfully. I could work around this with backing up the SQL DB's directly but since the EV agent is installed and licensed it doesn't let you select the databases directly on the SQL server. Just about ready to back to BE2010869Views1like4Comments
