Media host override for SAP restores on Data Domain storage server
Hi, We are required to run a very large restore (~12TB) of a SAP database. The backup image is stored on a Data Doamin storage server. We would like to force the restore to use a specific media server that is not the server used for the oirignal backup. The storage server has 6 DD Boost enabled media servers accessing it for both backups and duplications between data centers. Each time we initiate the restore a different media server is used. We have used the "media host override" settings but these do not seem to be honored for OST storgae servers according to this artilce - http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/how-use-media-host-override Has anyone else experinced this problem?2.1KViews6likes10CommentsSAP Backup fails after Upgrade to Netbackup 7.5.0.3
Hi, we upgraded our Master Server (windows 2003) from Netbackup 7.1 to Netbackup 7.5.0.3 Afterwards our SAP Backup fails. In the SAP Backup log we can see that after issuing the backint command it gives errors like: unable to find file XXXXX and then exits with error 2 The files in question (which are all in the list created by brarchive) are all in place. The SAP Backups work the following way: - The SAP Drives on the SAP Server are snapshotted and a mirror is splitted and then mounted on the Backup Master Server An Upgrade of the netbackup client and backint did not solve the issue. Anyone an idea?Solved1.3KViews3likes6CommentsSAP Backup Failed - error 12 - Keep Alive & Lock File in LOG
Hello I hope my title had enough keywords - here's the issue: Windows Server 2003 x64 NBU 7.1 SAP Backups .UTL file has the correct directories for SAP backups Backup begins at 10pm and crashes after 4, 5 or 6 hours (usual full backup is 6-ish hours) Same error everytime, only on this server (we have dozens of SAP servers) 6/26/2013 4:09:07 AM - Error bpbrm(pid=11876) could not write Keep Alive to database client (this repeats itself every 30-60 seconds for about 3 minutes) 6/26/2013 4:11:47 AM - Critical bpbrm(pid=11876) from client *********: FTL - Lock file ?????????????????????????????????????????????????k is unlocked I starred (***) the client name for security purposes, but those question marks are actually in the NBU log window. It's followed by: 6/26/2013 4:11:47 AM - Error bpbrm(pid=11876) could not write Keep Alive to database client 6/26/2013 4:11:47 AM - Critical bpbrm(pid=11876) from client *******: FTL - SAP BEGIN alter tablespace failed 6/26/2013 4:11:47 AM - Error bpbrm(pid=11876) could not write Keep Alive to database client 6/26/2013 4:11:47 AM - Critical bpbrm(pid=11876) from client *******: FTL - Backup operation aborted! 6/26/2013 4:11:47 AM - Info bpbkar32(pid=6504) done. status: 12 It started about 6 weeks ago. We switched backup nights (from one day to another) and still get an error - we checked the Windows tasks to see what could be interfering but nothing... also strangely nothing in the Event Log unless we're looking at the wrong place (Server 2003 is old school...) I saw one case on here that was "resolved" because the person had checked his BACKINT and UTL file but no precision on what was checked exactly. We uninstalled/reinstalled the NBU client as well, no effect. Also checked http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH53405 - but this isn't our case. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.Solved1.6KViews2likes7CommentsSAP/MaxDB backup of transaction logs - status code 6 resolution
If you are backing up transaction logs of SAP/MaxDB you probably have often failed backups with status code 6. But nothing wrong happened. Just no transactions was available for backup. It's a behavior of dbmcli - anything except successful backup returns exit code 1. But parent wrapper script provided by Symantec is not able to distinguish real errors from situation where there are just no transactions to backup. (Read TECH129715). By Symantec we have to wait until SAP will provide dbmcli with more granular exit codes. Seems that we cannot do anything. Or can? What is the standard output of successful backup? Here is one example of stdout log file from bphdb log directory: SAP_SCHEDULED = 1 SAP_USER_INITIATED = 0 SAP_SERVER = master SAP_POLICY = CUSTOMER1-SAP SAP_FULL = 0 SAP_CINC = 0 OK Returncode 0 Date 20131011 Time 00232008 Server SAPDB1 Database DB1 Kernel Version Kernel 7.9.08 Build 008-123-247-140 Pages Transferred 24 Pages Left 0 Volumes 1 Medianame BACKLog Location \\.\pipe\BACKLog Errortext Label LOG_000000662 Is Consistent First LOG Page 1990049 Last LOG Page 1990050 DB Stamp 1 Date 20131011 DB Stamp 1 Time 00230056 DB Stamp 2 Date 20131011 DB Stamp 2 Time 00230056 Page Count 1 Devices Used 1 Database ID SAPDB1:DB1_20130615_201611 Max Used Data Page Converter Page Count DBMCLI successful And now something completely different: SAP_SCHEDULED = 1 SAP_USER_INITIATED = 0 SAP_SERVER = master SAP_POLICY = CUSTOMER1-SAP SAP_FULL = 0 SAP_CINC = 0 ERR -24920,ERR_BACKUPOP: backup operation was unsuccessful The database was unable to fulfill a request (-123, No more log to save). Execution of DBMCLI command failed - exiting This is the example of situation when MaxDB has no transactions available since last backup. I have decided to use string "-123, No more log to save" as detector of this situation. Check whether your version of SAP/MaxDB is working the similar way. And what is the final solution? Just to catch output of dbmcli and seek for the right string. The whole script with colorized changes is available on my page HERE. Please, try it. May it will help you. In case of any troubles, send me a notice (like other string for different versions of MaxDB).1.8KViews2likes0CommentsMedia selection for SAP, Oracle (or possibly just window related?)
Netb 6.5.4,Solaris with SAP and ORA agents. Problem: for scheduled backups, there appear to be some issues related to media selection or 'why did my job stop'. Let me explain. With SAP backups I see this: policy starts, single stream, picks a tape, brbackup writes to it (SAP with Oracle btw). Then the backup enters a second phase, ie a separate job is spawned. This is to do the redo phase,ie we run brarchive. It drops the first tape and selects another ,writes to it.This repeats for the remaining phases of the job, so theres 2 tapes written alternately. Each spends (wastes?) time dismounting and remounting a new tape,A,B,A,B,A. Not knowing SAP for I'm not a SAP admin, is theres a good reason for doing this ie not putting all the data on a single media? I ask since on an unloaded system its not that important but when on a heavily used system this causes an issue: some other job jumps in and grabs the drive...backups that should take no time to complete to do arch redos or utl files (backup runs 5 phases,5 changes of media) are stretched out over hours. Similarly wth Oracle...the tpl runs, I write out the bulk of my data and then the next phase runs (archivelogs) and it needs a different media.Something else jumps in as if the job hasnt started and my Ora backup hangs around. This gets worse..the next phase (when there is a drive free) is then regarded as being out of the window of opportunity...its done the bulk data and now its been canned because the window has closed. Surely it would make sense to say if the initial job started in the window then all other spawned jobs are therefore deemed to have started within the window? Is there a way to do this? Simlarly if the job has begun then tape drive alloc should be reserved for that job if the job or subjob is still running? Thanks in advance,jim.289Views2likes1CommentSAP HANA "Backint missing software version tag" error
Hi everyone I beg for your help or advise if anyone has experimented this problem. We configured a SAP HANA IBM Appliance backup following the steps in the NetBackup admin guide for SAP, but after lunch a backup process it always fails taking about 30 minutes to end. We have a policy which contains clients based on the SAP backup type We aren't defining any of the variables within the utl file, therefore they are being passed by the sap_online_backup script However, this method doesn't utilize the SLP associated with the parent job, as the child job is spun up as "Application Default Backup". If we change the retention on that schedule, then every single backup will have the same SLP retention defined. What's the correct method in ensuring you have all the correct parent and corresponding child schedules set so that SLP is automated? Does this have to be done within' the sap_online_backup script? or will we have to use multiple / custom utl files? Thank you.314Views1like0CommentsNetbackup error 6 for sap online backup
