Multiple vendor OST in Backup Exec?
Does BE support OST from multple vendors? A 2016 post implies that it was supported, so I just want to make sure that's still true for BE 21. We've set up a new Dell Data Domain DD6400, but we need to keep the old Quest DR4100 around for a few more months to restore from if needed. Hi, This is a new topic to re-open the issue discussed here: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/tape-drive-goes-offline-second-backup Just to recap on the issue itself: Running BE2010 Trial on Windows Server 2008 R2 x64. Hardware is Dell R710 rack server, connected to a HP Ultrium 1760 LTO4 SAS drive via a Dell PERC 6/E SAS Adaptor card. This is what’s happening: Setup and run a backup job with full verify. I’ve tested up to a 250GB job and it completes fine the first time around. After completion of first job, rerun the same backup job (after tweaking the media overwrite/append etc settings) The job immediately fails, reporting the drive as offline – cannot bring drive back online using BackupExec administrator Close BackupExec administrator, restart BackupExec Device/Media service (which also restarts associated service dependencies). Re-open BackupExec administrator - drive appears to be online again, ready for another job to be kicked off. I’ve completely replaced: Numerous LTO tapes The Dell SAS adaptor that connects the Dell server to the HP rack chassis The HP Rack chassis that houses the 1U internal HP LTO4 Ultrium 1760 SAS drive, SAS adaptor board and all The internal HP LTO Ultrium 1760 drive itself We’ve verified that all above component drivers and firmware are fully up to date. This problem occurs with both Symantec Tape Drive drivers and HP's official LTO4 tape drivers, To me, the following facts suggest that the problem lies with BackupExec itself: After the drive goes offline, a simple restart of the BackupExec services seems to bring it back online again If the drive goes offline, and I stop the BackupExec Device/Media service, I can still access the drive using HP LTT utility, and HP Data Protector Express – only BackupExec detects the drive as offline. We’ve replaced all possible hardware components and the problem still remains This problem only ever occurs with BE, I'm testing with HP Data Proctector Express and MS's Data Protection Manager - all work fine. Luckily, I haven't bought a license for BackupExec yet, however this means I doubt Symantec Support will be willing to spend too much time on it, so I might be forced to go with MS's Data Protection Manager instead if I can't get a resolution soon. Has anyone seen/resolved this issue before? AlistairSolved8.8KViews1like40CommentsSetting up direct access san storage Backup exec 2012 and Equallogic san
Does any one know, of have experience in setting up Backup Exec 2012 to connect directly to the Equallogic SAN Device. We are wanting to use replicated/shared storage opton so backups are automatically available at both our backup exec servers over our san.Solved1.5KViews0likes3CommentsSetting up Optimized DeDuplication.
Good morning, We are in the process of configuring optimised deduplication on on Backup Exec 2012 servers. We have 1 CA Server and 1 Media Server. They each have a connected SAN disk, we have a Dell Equallogic SAN, located on each site and replicated. I am trying to setup the 'Optimised DeDuplication' We currently bacup using the Media Server to the DeDuplication Disk folder (located on the San) - The goal is to have the location of the data (the disk backups) replicated on both sites and accessible by both servers. Any pointers of helpers to get me on my way? Lee1.1KViews0likes4CommentsBackup Exec 2010 R3 Failed when i start job with (Hardware error)
Hello, i am using Backup Exec 2010 R3 in windows 2008 R2 Datacenter and using Dell Powervault TL2000 tape library to make backup. The problem is when i start any job 1-The job was running and the (current operation) was (Backup) and (job Status) was (running) 2-In the middle of running job ; an alert said ('Backup 00011' has reported Multiple Tape Alerts on Server ) was appeared. 3-Then another two alerts said ( Tape alert - attempting to clean drive.) and (Tape alert - drive cleaned.) ; then the job failed. is any idea can help me to solve this issue?.Is any tool can i use it to locate the source of the problem? Hello All, I have the following small annoying issue. I have created last month some simple backup jobs (backup from disk to tape), that at the end of the verify exports the tape into the I/O slot of our DELL TL2000. Since a day or two, the backup runs fine, but the export does not occur: Tape is still in the magazine slot and the status of the export job is Ready; invalid Storage device. Strange because this exporting went well before. The only thing that has changed is the location of the tape library which has been moved to the rack. I am pretty sure that all the cables has been connected as before (this time I was a cable labeling freak when i moved the hardware). So in short: backup runs fine; tape is not exported at the end. This is what i have done so far: I have modified the job once and removed the export "thingy" from the job. Saved the job. Then I modified it again, put again the export in. The export job number is now 0009 (before it was 0004). (I have some monthly and weekly jobs too that do the same) I restarted the tape library and the services. I hope it will runs fine tonight, but i want to know now if it will goes wel, so I amtrying to test the exporting. But i cannot determin the right testing procedure. Using the webinterface of the of the TL2000 - ihaveput a tape in the drive (the right drive - I checked the serial number ) but i cannot seem to let BE2012 recognize that there is a media in the drive (inventory does not do the trick). And i think it is pointless to start an export if there is no tape in to drive ? Is it possibleinBE2012 to just put a media in the drive, without doing anything else with it ? So that i can start my export job and see how it runs ? I hope anyone can shed some light and help me think of a way to test may export job and solve my problem. Cordialement / Regards, Johannes.Solved1.9KViews1like11CommentsSlow performace from BKExec 2012 to DeDuplicated Disk
Hello, We've just moved to BKExec 2012 from 2010. Fully removing then installing the software from scratch. We have two BKExec servers at different sites, both the same hardware spec, Windows 2008 X64 R2, SP1 with 32 GB memory. Our deduplication area is hosted on or Equalogic SAN connected by the LAN direct to the Backup Exec Server. The problem we are having is that backup are slow, especially exchange. Backing up a 171gb information store took almost 8 hours and failed reporting '-1022 There is a disk IO error' The backups speeds initially build up to around 900MB/s, but soon fall down to 390MB/s. Backing up a file server (1.5TB) took 32 hours at a rate of 778MB/s Performance wise, network on both server (backup and target) is never higher than 25% for both the network and san links. Memory usage is about 40% with cpu hardly being used. With the file server, we have F-Secure, but we ran a pre and post job command to stop this from scanning while the backup was running. Windows and BackUp Exec are both fully up to date. Any help on this would be greatly received. Thanks Lee1.8KViews1like17CommentsQuestion about CASO and ADBO
Hi, we just replaced our SAN infrastructure (Dell Equallogic 6100) and also replaced our BE Server (just the Hardware / BE2012) and Tape Library (LTO5) and added a Dell DR4000 (Stand Alone Deduplication Store -> B2D) + Agents for VMWare. We decided to go for for the VMWare Agents since we were running (a real crappy) VMWare Data Recovery for a couple of years for our "secondary" VM's. Beside that, we were using Windows Agents for our primary VM's and also for the attached (iSCSI Volumes) File-Server / Exchange / SQL - Voumes. The backup of the File - Server (~ 600 Gb / ~ 20 hours) / Exchange (~ 450 GB /~ 16 hours) and SQL (~70 GB) already took long enough before replacing the components, but since we started backing up all of our VM through BE, we ran out of time at all. So we were thinking using the ADBO for offhost backups but the first wanted to test this option, how to handle this option and if there is a real speed increase. Since there is no possibility to test and activate this option in a regular environment, we were told by our distributer to set up an test environment with the CASE and ADBO option (Server Option) installed to test the szenario (we do not have this possibility on short). They said the CASO and theADBO would take deep changes in the system so there is no possibility to revert these. Also there is a need for matching OS (excactly the same patchlevel for VSS) for the BE Server and Destination Servers. Questions: 1. We do have one BE 2012 server so there is no need the a second BE server. Is there a dependency between the CASO and ADBO option, since we would only need the ADBO option (the distributer sounded like that there is a dependency and both components have to be installed)? 2. Our BE server is Windows 2008 R2. Our file server also the SQL server both have the same, just the Exchange is Windows 2008. Does the Exchange have to be 2008 R2 in order to run offhost backups? 3. Does anyone have experience with the throughput of ADBO compared to the Windows Agent? WIth the Windows Agent we have about ~ 250 MB/min for File Server and ~ 450 MB/s for Exchange (for some reasen, on the old BE Server we had about ~ > 1.000 MB/min but i couldn't figure out so far) and i assume, that the throughput will be around 2.000 MB/min with the ADBO. Thanks in advance DennisSolved560Views0likes1Comment
