Netbackup, Sharepoint 2007 Cross farm restore - lab enviroment creator
I have to make restore of one SharePoint 2007 farm to another farm which will be used for lab and developing purposes, so both farm have to work in same time but with different names. GRT full and Full Non-GRT backup complete successfully without any warning. I’ve read checklist from article TECH148598, and clarify all settings. http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH148598 Restore process doesn’t start when I try to restore of SharePoint Web application as is advised in article HOWTO47543. I can restore without problems files from GRT backup. http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO47543 I’m just not sure how to configure properly Distributed Application Restore Mapping settings. In “NBU for SharePoint admin guide” there are not any examples. All backup goes to disk. NBU server is Netbackup 7.1 onto Windows Server 2008 R2. Production and lab frontend servers are SharePoint 2007 running onto Windows Server 2008 SP2 / 64 bits. SQL server is cluster, SQL 2008. I have following server configuration: Production SharePoint Farm: Intranet – Virtual name of NLB frontend SPSNode1 – Sharepoint frontend SPSNode2 - Sharepoint frontend ProdSQL – SQL cluster virtual name, backend in SharePoint config SQLnode1 – first node in SQL cluster SQLnode2 - second node in SQL cluster Lab SharePoint Farm: TESTintranet - Virtual name of NLB frontend TESTnode1 – frontend TESTnode2 – frontend TESTsql – SQL server, backend in SharePoint config Do you have any idea how to configure Distributed Application Restore Mapping? Any other ideas are welcome. I've just opena case let see who will be helpfull community or Tech Support :)Solved2.2KViews0likes15CommentsVM backup with the "file recovery" option, and GPT partitions
Hi all, In NetBackup, the feature "Enable file recovery from VM backup" is equivalent to Backup Exec's GRT backup and restore (Granular Recovery Technology). With this technology, basically you get to backup a VM as a whole, then it lets you restore it back either as a whole VM, or (if you want) just selectively restore individual files, individual Exchange mails, individual SQL DBs, individual Sharepoint objects and individual AD objects. With Backup Exec 2010 it is confirmed that GRT is NOT supported for GPT partitions inside VMs. GRT only works with MBR patitions. I couldn't find any official documentation anywhere about whether this has been "fixed" in Backup Exec 2012. With Netbackup. I also couldn't find any information regarding the following, but would appreciate if anyone could point me to some answers. In Netbackup 7.0.x and 7.1.x, let's say a VM's OS uses GPT partitions, and that the VM is backed up as a whole (using the policy type VMware): - Can normal flat files be individual restored? - Can MS SQL DBs be individual restored? - Can Exchange items be individual restored? (Answer is No: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO72087) - Can AD items be individual restored? - Can Sharepoint items be individual restored? - What about System State/Shadow Copy Components? - Are things the same in Netbackup 7.5? Please share if you have more information regarding the combination of VM, GPT partitions and GRT (Granular Recovery Technology). Thank you, RLeonSolved2.1KViews0likes5CommentsPolicies with SharePoint Policy Type fail with Error 196
First off, let me thank anyone in advance for any insight they may provide to this issue...so...Thank you! Let me give you a quick overview of the current configuration NetBackup server isa dedicated master server with an entire partition set aside for disk backups (as required by SharePoint Granular Backups). This 1.5 TB drive is dedicated for this purpose...I then have a Disk Staging policy setup to run each morning following the full backups (we have a few other servers that do granular full and incrementals that we also stage on the Master Server drive) which copy/duplicate the disk images to Tape (then expire once the disk gets about 65% full). We would then restore the Tape back to Disk if we need to do any error recovery. Currently, the SharePoint servers do weekly full and monthly full backups to this drive. The setup is something like this: Servername: servernameapp01 Within Host Properties -> Master Server -> SharePoint, there are about 7 servers that fall under this server "servernameapp01". There is one policy that runs "SharePoint_Farm_Backup" which kicks off full backups for each of the servers listed under the Host Properties field for the Master Server "SharePoint" policy settings area. As these kick off, all goes wellfor about 5 minutes (little green people running at full sprint, etc.)...one server after another begins to return an "Error 196", the backup window closed prior to the job completing. Now, this occurs only on SCHEDULED backups, NOT manual. I have attempted adjusting the backup window to cover 24/7, 12 hours, 1 hour, 13.5 hours, 27 minutes, 16minutes, whatever. The case is the same...anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes the individual jobs start to fail for each server under the SharePoint Policy Type. (MS-Sharepoint) and then state thewindow closed even though the window should beopen for another 6 hours. I have attempted to utilize multiplexing, increase the max jobs to 20, allowed for multiple data streams, etc., used the command prompt to manually set the schedule for the policy (bppschedrep) but nothing has fixed this issue with scheduling. Again, this only affects the SharePoint policy type and its servers. The Backup Selection is "Microsoft SharePoint Resources:/AllWeb" Here is a summarized output from a failed server: begin: parent job begin: SharePoint Resolver Start Process - SharePoint Resolve End Process - SharePoint Resolver end: SharePoint Granular Resolver, start notify script begin: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Step By Condition Status 0 end: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Step By Condition begin: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Read File List end: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Read File List begin: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Resolver Discovery end: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Resolver, Discovery begin: POlicy Execution Manage, PreProcess begin: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Stop on Error end: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Stop on Error begin: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Stop on Error end: SharePoint Granular Resolver, Stop on Error Client backup was not attempted because backup window closed Now, the problem I have is that there isn't anything in the log that shows it ran into a problem. Now I am THINKING that the overall SharePoint server (servernameapp01) policy finished backup prior to the Farm backing up, resulting in the fail, but I am not sure. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. If you need anymore information, I will be glad to submit it! Thanks again!2KViews0likes8CommentsNetbackup and 3PAR
I'm looking to use NBU 7.5 to handle our VM backups in our infrastructure which uses 3PAR F400 for storage. I've checked the compat lists and it looks like some elements are compatible but some are not. Can anyone offer advice on this if they are either currently using this setup or have came across this before? The infrastructure is all W2K200x and we would be looking to do integrated backups of Exchange and Sharepoint as well as the usual file data. Thanks.Solved1.8KViews0likes5CommentsGRT on virtual tape
i want to backup Active Directory and Exchange using GRT but i am facing a problem with GRT technology, GRT needs physical disk i have a virtual taope which means disks but seen by netbackup as a virtual tape , how can i make the GRT works with this virtual tape... it's urgent for me to bakup these servers with GRT technologySolved1.6KViews0likes10CommentsTotally Annoyed with Granular Recovery & NBU 6.5.3
I have had nothing but drama when it comes to NBU 6.5.3 with Exchange Granular recovery and SharePoint document level recovery.I’ve had several issues with Exchange granular recovery with Exchange 2007 including catalog backups failing and most recently the inability to actually browse/drill down into mailboxes. Symantec has spent all week trying to get this to work reliably and they have not been able to.SharePoint document level backup and restore has not worked for me since day one, and Symantec have been working on it for a month now. This makes it extremely difficult for me to convince the business the NBU is a superior choice to BackupExec.Especially when they already use BackupExec and Exchange backups work perfectly fine, and without the need of disk-based storage. I wish the sales people better explained the many caveats that go along with Exchange and SharePoint granular recovery. If we knew that the technology was reliant on disk-based storage, and that we’d have to reserve double the amount of storage space for Exchange/SharePoint just to hold and be able to recover two day’s worth of backups we might have re-thought the idea. To say I’m disappointed in the product is an understatement.I know NBU has been around for some time, but I think the granular recovery options for Exchange and SharePoint are still quite immature. I was about to abandon Exchange granular and go with 1 policy for Exchange info store backups and one for public folders and mailboxes. Now I get tons of error messages and what took 1 ½ hrs using the granular method, took 10 ½ hrs and generated heaps of access denied and other error messages! I’d like to know if anyone has had any similar experiences (good or bad) with regard to NBU 6.5.3 and Exchange/SharePoint and what they have done to provide a reliable backup and recovery solution. Afternoon all, I suspect i have missed something obvious, so hopefully this should be an easy one for you all. I have a successful sharepoint 2007 backup that i am trying to restore to another Sharepoint server and another SQL Server for the DB. the SharePoint and SQL servers are all running Windows 2008 Std (and version 7 NBU Client) The Master server is Windows 2k3 running NetBackup 7 I have created an empty sharepoint farm to restore into. When i try to do any restores on from the sharepoint policy i get the dialog box saying "Restore has started, would you like to view the status?" But the view status window is empty with no job being listed and no information (again blank) in the Verbose section. No jobs are being started on the Master server either. However if i run a regular flat file backup and restorefrom the same server it works perfectly. I'm completely puzzled! Thanks In advance Mark1.3KViews0likes9CommentsHow large is your SharePoint farm?
I'm trying to get a feel for what others are doing with their SharePoint backups. I've been reading about issues with SharePoint backups that have been resolved and I think that the majority of the backups have been farm-level backups using the backup selection of "Microsoft SharePoint Resources\" If this is true, then the SharePoint farms must be relatively small .... like less than 10TB. Am I correct in this or is anyone doing backups of SharePoint farms that are larger than that? Please share your experiences here....I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested in this. Part of the reason for asking this question is that I don't believe that NetBackup will scale well with SharePoint. This could be due to the way that SharePoint is architected and not a fault of the NetBackup SharePoint agent. thanks.1.2KViews0likes5CommentsNetBackup SharePoint Web collection restores
Does anyone have any experiences/ideas how to use NetBackup to perform cross site web collection restores for SharePoint 2007? Currently, we have one production MOSS farm and one MOSS farm on DR site. They are two different MOSS farms. What we tried to do is be able to restore some of the web collections from production site to DR site, instead of restore the whole farm? Is that possible? If possible, is there any tips how to do that? If not possible, can we restore the whole farm onto different MOSS environment, (e.g. different MOSS front-end server and different SQL back-end server)? and How to? Many thanks, RockeySolved1.2KViews0likes3Comments
