Advanced Open File Option Issue

The backup log shows the Advance Open File agent was not used even though the Advanced Open File Option was selected in the backups.  The lead VERITAS tech advised to delete all the existing volume shadow copy backups, but this will also delete our capability to restore files from previous versions in Windows. Instead Veritas should make sure the Advance Open File Option works correctly within the shadow copy settings of the Microsoft server.

    If the space that you have allocated is just sufficient for the number of shadow copies that you specify, then obviously the snapshot required by BE cannot be taken due to insufficient space.  Would you like such a snapshot to delete your shadow copies?  The OS can delete shadow copies but not BE.

    You should either remove the space limit or increase the limit so that the snapshot can be taken.

    BE just invokes VSS to take a snapshot of the volume before doing the backup.  If for some reason, VSS cannot be invoked, there is nothing much BE can do. Often, this failure is due to lack of space.  Deleting existing shadow copy component backups is a troubleshooting step.

      The O.S. has no problems invoking VSS for shadow copy images on the volume BE is backing up. Now I do set a limit for the amount of space allocated to shadow copy images in which the O.S. automatically deletes the oldest image. If BE just invokes VSS to take a snapshot of the volume before doing the backup then in my mind it shouldn't be having a problem either because the O.S. does not have a problem invoking VSS.
