I am running Backup Exec 10 d without any problems , all of the sudden I started to get messages as in the pictures they are all related to the overwrite protection period. All what I need is to allow the Backup Job to overwrite automatically any imported media. I also attached the current settings for the media set…I need your help badly I don’t know where the problem is?

As per the above settings it should overwrite the date but there is one thing that is not included in the screen shot. What about the job settings for device and media. Which option is selected there. Make sure it should be overwrite the media selected or append to media if no appendable media then overwrite.

1. Move the tape to the scratch media and see if that helps 2. Check if there is any phiscal lock on the tape(i mean some tapes have a switch through which they can be overwrite protected) 3. Try running a Quick erase on the tape and see if that helps 4. is the issue happening woth other tapes as well .

A few options: - check that that phyical overwrite protection tabs have not been moved on your tapes. - if you have used these media in this server before - they won't counts as imported media and as you have infinite append you could be filling them till full and then be being asked for a second tape? - check the status of the media itself before the job rus (i.e. is it appendable/overwriteable etc - as by the time you come in the next day the media might be overwritable but might not have been when the job started. Note: you will need to review all the columns in the media screen - which often means scrolling sidewsays.

Try associating the tape with the retired media set and then deleting it. After that, put the tape into the tape drive and then do an inventory on the tape.

Well...For Sazz you can check the picture below for the Job seetings. For RahulG..yes this issue issue happening with other tapes. For Colin...Yes I used this tape before. I will continue with your advices and let you know the result. Thanks

A few options:

The tape is not physically locked...I moved the tape to scratched media with no change.
When I just insert the tape i got the below a message that the media is overwrite protected and tape ejected

Any other advice ?

In that case either it is symantec database gone bad and not detected that tape is overwritable or the Drive itself. Try loading the latest symantec drivers and try other new tapes. If that doesn't resolve the issue then please try a new drive

Try using NT backup and see if you can write to the tape using NT backup .?

Not yet...but I think If the settings foe media set were (Overwrite Protection Period: None) and on media management allow append then overwrite,,,,things should run normally I dont know where the problem is!!!!!

Its probably some corruption in the database in that case . To check this you follow this steps
Stop Be services --Make a copy of data and the catalog folder x://program files/symantec/baclup exec
Run Beutility which would be under x://program files/symantec/exec
select the option to revocer database--select the drop the Database and relod from base .
then run inventory on the tape and try the bakup job again
if still does not work you can just repalce the data and the catalog folder back replacing the one which have the blank database
