Backup Exec 2012 Remote Agent for Windows install error

Hi,

i cannot install (remote or local) Remote Agent for Windows on two win 2008 R2 Servers. One is running Exchange 2010, the other is a HyperV host running a few VMs.

On the HyperV the agent has been running till it 'lost' it's trust to the Backup Exec Server (don't know why!!). I uninstalled the agent with ARP and tried to reinstall the agent serveral Times remote and locally.

On the Exchange server the errors appeared at my first try.

The errors I get are only logged in Logs, not at the UI.

On the Backup Exec 2012 server:

- in [servername]_Push.log:

[...

Checking process status: 9596
ERROR retrieving registry string: 2147483650, SOFTWARE\Symantec\SymcInstall, Action
ERROR: Win32: 2

ERROR: Exception: System.NullReferenceException: Der Objektverweis wurde nicht auf eine Objektinstanz festgelegt....

...]

The "win32 errors differ from try to try --> 1, 1603, ...

The Checking process status differs also from try to try --> 9596, 6892...

On the target machine:

in RAWSINST2012.HTM:

[...

07-11-2012,15:06:23 : Launching Silent Install

+ 07-11-2012,15:12:37 : ERROR: Installation failed with error 1. GetLastError = :0

...]

Repeating endless until I kill the process trees in Task Manager.

I Attached a pair of above mentioned complete logs.

What is going wrong here????

  • On a new win 2008 R2 with the same Sec. policy the installation was successfull.

The Source seams to be OK.

  • OK...so if the AV isn't responsible for anything, is there any anti-malware-type software installed that might be blocking it?

Otherwise another suggestion is to remove the security policy from the server temporarily, and then trying the installation again as it seems to be a WIndows-related issue and not BE!

    Thanks!

  • Hmmm, it's the same policy as for the new testserver.

But if you suggest, I'll do it. And

it's a production environment. So the removal of the policy will take affect after a reboot which I'll do tonight.

  • Now I tried the install without policy but same behaviour.

Is it possible that there are old registry records on a special place which I didn't delete ('caause I diddn't find them...)? File system is clean also HKLM\Software.

  • I checked, deleted all and rebooted the server. Then startet a new install and had a look at all the things in the logs, file system Task manager and the registry. I found that the BE-Server starts PushRAWS.exe which creates Directory named BEW-d74cf... where it copys the install sources (RAWSX64, MSXML).

It starts instances of _Setup.exe, Setup.exe,Stripmon.exe and VxLogServer.exe.

    It creates the regkeys

On the target machine the 4 processes ar stalling, on the BE Server it fails to read the regkey 'HKLM\Software\Symantec\SymcInstall\Total Percent Done' as it isn't present (Push.log). Why isn't it present?

BE-server shoult have created it itself. Or is it looking for an existing regkey 'cause it tries to have a look into "database" (RAWSINST2012.HTM)

    07-16-2012,14:55:22 : AgentSeqDlgs::AgentInstaller
    07-16-2012,14:55:22 : Running Maintenance Mode
07-16-2012,14:55:22 : Get installed MSI from cache folder: C:\Windows\Installer\578dd971.msi
07-16-2012,14:55:37 : ERROR: Opening Reference database. Error: 1624
    07-16-2012,15:06:50 : ERROR: Installation failed with error 1. GetLastError = :0

Then this is an OS issue, wright?

  • ...and have you tried to install it with admin rights? Right-click --> Run As...?

  • Yes I did. And at this point I do not understand whatfor more rights should be necessary, because some regkeys and fsos are created and the prob seeems to be that others aren't .

  • ...either your Domain Admin or Local Admin accounts...if it still doesn't work, I'll hit the support flag, but I'd also then suggest you open a query with Symantec if you have support with them. When/if they assist you, post back here with the solution and then close this query off.

    Thanks!
