Backup Exec Small Business Server Edition Agents

The Premium Edition includes the Standard Edition agents and options. Additionally, it includes the SQL Server Agent but that for the SQl instance ont he actual SBS server .If you wish to back additional SQl server you need to purchase another SQL agent license thought even if you have a remote agent license the backup would work fine for SQL but it would be intergrity issue

Just letting everyone know that I have spoken to a symantec employee who said you only get a RAWS agent, and no SQL Agent for the second server.

Well as I mentioned you can backup the SQl databases even if you just have a remote agent license but to be compliant with regards to licenses , you need a SQL agent license .The number of SQL license will depend upong the number of Sql server you are going to backup thought the backup would run fine for all the SQl server Even if you have just one SQl license installed and remote agent license installed for the number of servers.

If you are running SQL Server on both the SBS machine and the remote machine you would need two SQL serials to be in license compliance, even though the second backup will run with only a RAWS installed on the second server. 

I tend to disagree with your statement. Backup exec SBS R3 comes with the SQL Agent to be installed on the local OS. This is because if it wasn't included, it would not be able to backup the entire SBS environment. Things like WSUS and SBS Monitoring all have their own SQL Instance.

When you talk about the second server (and SQL has been installed on the second server), then you do need to purchase an additional SQL Agent. You can probably get away with using the RAWS that does come with Backup Exec SBS R3, but it will probably only take a Snapshot using VSS of the SQL database files.

The way that the licensing is written, as long as a SQL or Exchange or Lotus serial is installed, you can backup as many of those servers as you wish, as long as the RAWS is installed on each server

But to be in compliance with the Licensing Policy, you need a separate serial for each database server.  SBS includes one SQL license, and the SQL serial includes a RAWS, So for one SBS server that runs SQL and one remote SQL server you would need the base SBS license and one SQL license (and a RAWS installed and running on the second server)

Ah Yeah that makes sense. Must have miss understood your previous post where you said

I took that as you need to purchase Backup Exec SBS + SQL for the SBS box + another SQL Agent for the Second box.

All good now though :)

The SBS licence comes with a SQL licence for the SBS box.
