BE 12.5 restoring mailstore to Exchange 2003 RSG

Hello,
I have a request to restore our Sales People mailstore, then exmerge it out to PST files. There are about 100+ mailboxes at 40GB

Exchange 2003 SP2 on Windows 2003 x86
Media Server: Backup Exec 12.5 SP2 on Windows 2003 x64

I have reviewed the two documents below about RSG and Backup Exec.

From my understanding: I create the RSG, Backup Exec will attempt the restore, the RSG will see the restore, intercept it and all the restore will be done to the RSG, not the LIVE mailstore, correct?

I am also unclear what exact settings I should do for the BE restore job? Do I just do the default options (don’t enter anything for the Microsoft Exchange Redirection pane)?

Thanks for your help.
  • The default behaviour of exchange 2003 is to restore to RSG if it is present and a mailbox database has been added to it. So, all you would need to do is create an RSG on exchange server and add the mialbox store in question to it. Create a temp folder on a drive with enough space to host the transaction logs in the backup set. Default is c:\temp. This folder is used to stage the transaction logs before performing the recovery. The restore job would use default setting, just specify the temp folder if you are not using the c:\temp as default folder for transaction logs.

There is no difference in the restore process as such. Do let us know if this works for you.

Please mark it a solution, if this is useful.
    Thanks

  • You would redirect to that restore group, and this would be found in the restore job itself.
That is the way I would do it, although there is a forum query around here where they state it will automatically redirect to the RSG during a restore.

  • The redirect to RSG applies only to Exchange 2007, and not to Exchange 2003. So, regular restore should be good for Exchange 2003.

    Thanks
  • I followed Symantec KB 264815. Created the RSG and assigned a database for recovery on Exchange then created the BE recovery job (I left the default options under Microsoft Exchange Redirection and no changes under the Micosoft Exchange pane) and the files went into the recovery storage.

I read the MS and Symantech docs and thought the restore would go to recovery group, but it was still a leap of faith for me.
