BE2012 and dedup Server 2012R2

Hi all,

just wanted to know if i can backup a fileserver Windows 2012 R2 with dedup data with BE2012.

What do I need for this, any extra licens or so?

Thank you!

  • We do not need anything more than the standard agent for windows licenses - although as discussed the data is backed up in re-hydrated form so to us it is just seen as files.

BTW there are enhancements and fixes in BE 2014 that will never be rolled back to BE 2012 so you should strongly consider an upgrade

  • Hi,

No you don't need an additional license, and yes you can back it up.

The data will rehydrate though, which happens when dedupe is involved.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

cool, and while the rehydration is running where will the data will be stored? I mean it is possible that the volume with the dedup data run out of space?

  • This may help - http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO99631

  • Sorry but something fundamental has been missed in the previous answwers - you need BE 2014 to backup Windows 2012 R2. BE 2012 can backup Windows 2012 (pre R2)

If you have maintenance then the upgrade licenses are part of your maintenance. If you do not have maintenance, then talk to your reseller as you may be eligible for an upgrade offer

  • ah ok thanks, and for that (dedup on Server 2012 pre R2) is no additional licens is required as well?

    Thanks
