Expired backup not be overwritten ??

For current "append" setting, all expired sets still keep until manually delete it ?? Otherwise, tape will full.

If "overwrite" is specificed, then only expired sets will be overwritten ??

 

When you append to a tape, the backup sets that are currently on the tape would not be deleted and the tape will slowly fill up. When the tape is full, the job writing to the tape will need a second overwritable tape to continue. For the full tape, you can either wait for the tape to expire and then overwrite it, or you can erase it If you specify overwrite in your job, the job can only overwrite the tape when all the backup sets on the tape has expired so all of them would be deleted

Set 2: hkbems01 - Sat  ---- (backup from 11-17 Feb)

Set 3: hkbems01 - Sun ---- (backup from 18-24 Feb)

Set 1: hkbems01 (Set1) ---- (backup from 25 Feb - 3 Mar)

 

In our situation, we used 3 set tapes for backup. (1 set per week)

This week is using set 1.

I have checked set 2 and set 3 tape. Only backup week data was kept. But they are using the same slot and same settings.

So I am confusing why set 3 tape still keeping expired data.

 

Otherwise, for "hkbems01 - Sat', why it show "overwriteable" ?? How to change it like upper 2 ??

It is shown as overwritable because the OPP has expired. If you want to protect the tape, then go to the media set and extend the OPP, but I don't think you want to do that. If the other two tapes are overwritten, then the old backup sets would not exists

Why last time backup (27 Jan - 5 Feb 2014) has expired, but still keeping ???

The tape may have expired but it is not overwritten so the backup sets are still on the tape. When a media expires, it does not mean that the backup sets in it is automatically deleted. They are only deleted when the media is next overwritten

So if I want to remove expired backup sets, I should select "Overwrite media" here ??

Yes. The next time you run the job, it will overwrite the tape

What's the differnece of media set overwrite setting and setting of backup job "When the job begins" ?

In my situation, I want to keep for 1 weeks data only. Backup set will be removed / overwritten after next backup with this tape 2 weeks later.
