I have tried to restore bkf

Did you catalog the *.bkf files before trying the restore? If not, do so and then try the restore again.

There is no guarantee that NTBackup can restore from a .bkf file created by BE.  NTBackup is a stripped-down version of of BE and is a couple of versions behind the latest version of BE.

you can try using below listed NTBackup "Restore" utility.

Utility for restoring backups made on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to computers running Windows Vista and Microsoft® Windows Server® 2008.

The main question is was the .bkf file created by Backup Exec or NTbackup?

I think the last NTbackup in Windows when it was Veritas not Symantec so it obviously is very much behind any current version of Backup Exec. Besides, if you still have the copy of Backup Exec which can be installed and used for the restore it would be a lot reliable. If this is not an option then you might want to try installing BE 2012 in trial and attempt a restore.

Backup file was created using NTbackup, few months back on my external hard disk.

Thanks to everyone for their response, i have got the solution & the cause of error was a damaged backup (bkf) file. After searching on google, I got this: http://www.techrepublic.com/forums/questions/ntbackup-unrecognized-data-error/ which was helping in solving the issue.
