Licencing

Good Afternoon.

Just q uick question regarding licencing in BKExec 2010.

 

I have a 2 servers, 1 of them running as the CA Server. 

 

Do I need to added all my licences to both servers, or do I only apply them to the CA Server?

 

Do I need to buy multiple licences for each BKExec server? e.g.  4x ADRA Option Licences to back up 2 DCs,   or  2x remote agents to back up 1 server remote server?

 

Any help would be amazing

    ...let's simplify this because I think it has become very complicated...

     

    1. To enable CASO you need to license a server = 1 CASO license.

    2. To manage another server, you need the equivalent licenses already installed on that managed media server. So if you're going to manage an Exchange server, you need 1 license for the Exchange server, and 1 license for Exchange for the CASO server.

    3. I suspect you need the equivalent licenses anyway if you just plan to use the CASO server as a reporting tool/single pane for support like I do.

     

    In your case, if the license isn't installed on the CAS, it won't see the application you need to back up...so in effect you cannot configure the job to back up that application.

    By base licence I take it that is just for the actaul BKExec Server.

    All the aditional licenses are installed on the Central admin server and On the other media server you just need the Base license installed .

    IF you purchase a license for the CASO and you can add as many MMS (Managed Media Server ) to it . There is not any limitations like such on number of servers that can be added . But each MMS would need a base license .

    License of the agent are installed on the CAS server eg if you have 4 exchange server you would need 4 exchange agent license installed on the CAS server

     2 servers with 1 acting as a CAS is overkill. Why not just use 1 server to connect to the other. BE has that ability...you'd simply select the option on the main screen to connect to another server.

    The CASO license tends to be pretty expensive, and I think in an environment with 2 servers, its use is made null. It is VERY effective with more than 3 servers. To give you an idea I have a CASO server curently managing 30 servers in our environment.

    You could use that money elsewhere to buy additional agents, or invest in another IT budget perhaps! Anyways thats ok .

    We use the CAS at our secondary site, with the main backups taking place on the main site. All manged by 1 server. All the logs and jobs are replicated as part of our DR / BCP.

    We will also be expanding with 2 more BE servers in the near future.

    I am not sure the licensing comments already given are correct - for instance if you have an Exchange server being backed up by the MMS and you only put the Exchange license on the CAS then the CAS will let you create the backup jobs because it has the Exchange settings and can browse the Exchange resources however when the CAS sends the job to the MMS to run, the MMS won't have a license and will fail the job.

    Similarly if you install the Exchange License on the MMS instead of the CAS then you won't be able to create/configure the Exchange job on the CAS but if you configure the job locally on the MMS it will run (and still send logs up to the CAS if configured to do so)

    As such I think you need a license on both CAS and MMS (although I am not 100% sure of this as I haven't tested that kind of setup with limited licenses)

    Whether or not this can be the same license legally would probably need you to confirm with the Symantec Customer Care/Licensing teams.
