Slow Backup Windows 2012 with dedu enabled

Hi,

I have be 2010 R3 SP4 installed in a Windows 2008R2.

My file server is vm esxi 5.5 windows 2012  with deduplication enabled to save space in disk. I use this feature on windows because I don't have license for dedup with be.

My disk for file server have 900GB and deduplication has a rate of 38%, saving 535GB. This disk is a RDM disk in equallogic storage.

The problem is that backup is so slow. A full backup started on friday night and today(monday) don't finished.

I did several tests:

SERVER01 old file server windows 2008R2 Folder with 35GB finished in 0:49:33 997.00 MB/min

SERVER02 current file server windows 2012 Folder deduplicated with 35BG finished in 1:26:50 460.00 MB/min

Backup to Disk

SERVER01 old file server windows 2008R2 Folder with 35GB finished 1:13:55 677.00 MB/min

SERVER02 current file server windows 2012 Folder deduplicated with 35BG finished 1:52:00 420.00 MB/min

SERVER02 add new disk with 100GB RDM without dedup enable. Folder with 35GB finished 0:48:20 1.058.00 MB/min

The folder used is the same to all tests. Looking the tests the problem  should be in backup dedup files.

Are any configuration necessary to optimize backup of dedup files?

Does BE 2010 R3 SP4 support windows 2012 dedup file?

  • Netbackup contains a setting "enable optimized backup of Windows deduplicated volumes" which allows the backup to be optimized. BE 2012 / BE 2014 backs up in non-optimized mode.

  • Hi,

make sure that any AV installed isn't perhaps scanning the dedupe folder, and if so, put in an exclusion for it.

    BE 2010 R3 supports Windows Server 2012.

    Thanks!

  • Verbatim from http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO99631

" If you back up optimized data, Backup Exec backs it up in its original, non-optimized format. "

This probably explains the slowness as the data is being rehydrated.

  • Hi,

I did test disabling scan of my kaspersky antivirus but I do not see better performance. The backup continues slow.

I agree with symantec when he says who support win2012, but the backup is doing in non optimized mode.

BE 2012 or 2014 work with optimized mode? Maybe netbackup?

  • Netbackup contains a setting "enable optimized backup of Windows deduplicated volumes" which allows the backup to be optimized. BE 2012 / BE 2014 backs up in non-optimized mode.

  • Thank you. now I need decide what is more important: Storage space or data recovery.

  • ...data recovery, ALWAYS data recovery. Storage space will dictate how many recovery points you have.

    Thanks!
