slow job rate

Hi,

I am currently experiencing very slow job rate with BE 2010. I have BESR 2010 which backups 25+ win servers every month on to its local disk. The local disk is an attched external stack (HP MSA 70 stack) consists of nearly 20 disks. This is again configured into 2 RAID 5 logical drives and are represented as D and E drive on the server. Tape library is attached to the server. I normally backup the data backed up by BESR on to the tapes from local disks. Job rate is good when i backup data on my D drive (job rate is around 3100 MB/min), but while backing up data on E drive it is just below 200 MB/min. Any reason why the rate is very low and what could be done to increase the speed?

    Running multiple jobs to the same volume will decrease the speed.
    Also Antivirus scanning may slow down your backup2disk backups.

    I can eliminate AV issue, bcoz i am able to backup the other drive. Also there are no multiple jobs running at the same time.

    DIfferent drive configuration?  I'm not just talking the physical drives, but more so RAID card LUN settings (cluster sizes, write-back, etc), then NTFS formatting settings, Windows Write-Back cache enabled, etc?

    Drive fragmentation as others pointed out

    Perhaps even a cabling issue?

    Lastly, HP is notorious for firmware updates...  See if the MSA70 and the RAID controller need any.

    Maybe antivirus is excluding the D-drive, but not the E-drive !

    Hi there,

     

    Multiple small files can also increase the time taken to do backups, and decrease the speed significantly.

    What sort of data is being backed up on the second drive, and does it include lots of files...?

    @zerocool:

    both the drives have been excluded. Infact it worked earlier.

    @ craig:

    its the same kind of files i.e .v2i files. infact the data on D drive is nearly 700 gb which takes 3-4 hrs to backup, while the data on E drive which is around 250 Gb taking ages.

    the configuartion is same for the drives and all the disks are hosted on the same device i.e HP msa stack.

    ...that's all 100%. Are there any additional activities going on with that drive during the backup run? What happens if you run a backup of it outside of your normal backup window?
