tape alert "Media statistics have been lost some time in the past"

I have received a tape alert "Media statistics have been lost some time in the past" recently. It appeared in each backup job log since last Friday, while the job status is still successful.

----- TapeAlert Events -----
Warning - Media statistics have been lost some time in the past.
Robotic Library: SONY 1
Drive: SONY 2
Slot: 2

I have browsed the knowledgebase (http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/230206.htm).
For this specific alert, it says:
Flag Number: 51
Flag: Tape directory invalid at unload
Type: W
Required Host Message: Media statistics have been lost at some time in the past
Cause: Drive or library powered down with tape loaded

Will it affect my data on the tape? How to solve it?

I am using backup 9.1, and the tape device is SONY storstation LIB81(SDX-500V).

Thanks

  • Hello,

    The message

"Media statistics have been lost some time in the past"

should not be ignored as it indicates tape device related issue.

This may later translate to drive read/write errors.

Please refer to the following technote:

    http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/194520.htm

We recommend you to perform the following as preliminary troubleshooting measures:

    1) Verify that the drive firmware is updated.

    2) Verify that the media you are using has not exceeded the manufacturer's
    recommended maximum period.

    3) Clean the drive with cleaning media 3-4 times consecutively.

    4) Verify that the tape device drivers are updated for your currently
    deployed version of Backup Exec.

Install the latest device drivers using following link:-
VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/273853.htm

  • Our tape device and tapes are almost new. We have backed up less than 100G data till now. The tape in the slot 2 is also a new one.

I have replaced that tape with another new one, done the backup job and there is no more alert till now.

I am not sure whether the tape once in that slot is defective.

    Thanks
  • Hello,

To isolate this issue take the backup with NTBackup and verify the result.
