To specify drive letters/folders or sharenames in selection lists?

Hi all,

I am after some info on whether BE recommends drives & folders or sharenames in the selection lists. I cannot find any info on it, so maybe it doesn't matter. I can see advantages of both and am thinking of switching over from drive letters to sharenames.

Thanks for any input.

  • For remote machines, you should specify Server\Share rather than a mapped drive letter

  • If the data is local to the media server, then you can select from the drive letter.

If the data is on a remote box, you must connect to a share defined on that box.  This means that the BackupExec service account must have access to the share and the data on it

It also means that you need a RAWS (Remote Agent for Windows Systems) serial installed on the media server

  • Thanks for replying - I am talking mainly about remote servers (with agent installed), and I can specify either drive letter or share in the selection lists.

  • Thanks Ken, makes sense to use a share on the remote machines.
