Centera Compliance Mode Deletion Issue

• Vault store partition retention is set to: only for a centera compliance plus mode
• We are using centera collection - wondering if this has anything to do with it.

In Centera Compliance Plus mode Clips are created with non zero retention period.

Correct.  We do not want a zero retention period.  The customer has items varying between 2-7 years.  They want to archive everything and start deleting the items > 6 years old right away.  Hence we have the EV RC = 6 years from Modified date and my understanding is Centera should respect the EV RC. 

However it is preventing deletion of items > 6 years, even though EV expiry in report mode shows items are ready for expiry.

Based on the technote above, centrera should set Time To Live (TTL) on clip in the following way:

For example, item with sent/received (i.e. modified) date of 8/1/2006, archived on 8/1/2011 with EV RC = 6 years. 

• If using Archived Date on RC: TTL on clip = 6 years from 8/1/2011
• If using Modified Date on RC: TTL on clip = 6 years - (8/1/2011 – 8/1/2006) = 6 – 5 = 1 year

Based on the dtrace, I suspect Centera is not setting the TTL correclty.

We are using a migration tool using the EV API and I wonder if the API is not handling the date mechanism as described above.

The quick answer that gonz pointed out is that the items arent past their retention
The reason is probably because you are expiring on sent/received (modified) and not by archived date

So when you archive an item on the centera, it starts the retention from as soon as that item is archived, but in EV you can do it based on when the item is archived or based on the sent date of the email (or modification date for a file)

So lets say i have an item Sent on 01/01/2006 and i archive it 01/01/2011
Ifi have a retention period of 6 years....
Based on Modification (Sent) date it should expire - 01/01/2012
Based on Archived date it should expire - 01/01/2017

you will have to set your expiry to be by Archived Date and not modification

Does that mean we cannot use Modified date with Centera?  That's not what Tech 49413 seems to indicate:

"On a Centera, when EV is archiving messages the RC period is used to set the Clip retention period.  If Storage Expiry is by Archived date, the Clip retention period will be the same as the RC period  If Storage Expiry is by Modified date, the Clip retention will be reduced by the difference between the message's Modified and the time when it is archived."

Am I missing something?

I would suggest to obtain from EMC the Centera Clip Descriptor File to really know what is the retention.period assigned.

You can also archive 2 new items, one with the Retention Category based on Archived Date, the other one with the RC based on modified date.

Obtain the clip ids and the Centera Clip Description File and see what´s happening regarding with the retention.period value.

Hi Gonz.  Thank you very much for the input and the tech article. It looks like it has a lot of info.  I will go through it and try to compare the clip retentions and will let you know how that pans out.

Regarding your question about the migration tool, it is migrating eml's to EV via the EV API.  I don't know if it gets involved in doing retention calculations, etc.  All we see is archived items are getting the correct EV RC applied.  I would guess that from that point on EV would handle passing on RC info to Centera.  But you never know.
