Closed Partition Backup question

Our legal department has been very generous with regards to expiry.  Therefore, we have several closed partitons.  We have been backing them up weekly over the weekend.  Over the past month or so the back ups have taken longer and longer.

I'm looking for recommendations on the best option:

1.  Make one last back up of the closed partitions and store it permenantly.

2. Back up  closed partions once a year.

3. Backup closed partitons every six months.

4. Backup closed partitions quarterly.

5. Back up closed partitons once a month.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Rick

  • by "very generous with regards to expiry" do you mean you are expiring a lot of data on a regular basis or you're not expiring?

if you are then it's important that you backup the closed partitons more frequently and store them for a shorter period of time since you are required not to have the data. on the other hand, if you're not expiring then yea, maybe limit the closed partition backup to once a month or once a qtr and store it for a longer time.

  • make sure that your backup set retention is at least one increment longer than your backup frequency ;)

  • Very generous means that at this point our legal dept. does not want us to expire anything. So . I like the idea of once a month or even once a quarter.  Thanks.
