Enabling Character Limit Within Exchange Archiving Policy

I'm testing out the feature, within the Exchange Archive Policy, to limit # of characters displayed in an EV shortcut within Outlook.  I have the feature working and any new item archived only displays 200 characters in shortcut.  Is there a way, when the archive task runs against the mailbox, to apply this 200 character limit to shortcuts that already exist in the mailbox?  Or will this character limit only apply to newly archived items?  I've run a couple archiving jobs against my mailbox but it seems to only apply the character limit to newly archived items...

Any ideas??
