nbu dedupe query

1 ,client side and media server side deduplication occurs in case of MSDP or data domain or both?

2. NBU appliances  are used for deduplication. What are the technologies?

3.Data domain is not an NBU appliance. What is it then?

4.MSDP is NBU deduplication technology? It is also known as MSDP pure disk?

5.N52 * * THIS IS PURE DISK MSDP ?

6.N50** PURE DISK APPLIANCES.What are the examples of such appliances?

7.. MSDP and pure disk are OPEN storage?

  • And some of your questions sent to me directly:

    > 1....every data domain box or appliance box has a OS from where it can be operated?

Yes, Data Domains also run some unix OS (most likely a Linux variant).

    > 2....If yes, then this OS has a host name which we called as storage server in NBU???

The appliance gets a hostname and a NetBackup media server name just as any other netbackup media server.

    > 3...We give that name while configuring storage server??

When you boot the appliance for the first time it asks all necessary info, and it will create all storage server/disk pool configuration for you.

    > 4...NetBackup Media Server Deduplication Option (master server, media server, client,
    > or VMware backup host)

The 52xx appliance can be Master/Media server or Media server (and VMware backup host in either situation as well).

  • Hi forum people,

Please reply to this query. This is my request.

  • > 1 ,client side and media server side deduplication occurs in case of MSDP or data domain or both?

You cannot perform client side dedupe when storing in a Data Domain, only to Symantec deduplication pool. Data Domains can do media server dedupe if you install and configure the Data Domain Boost software.

    > 2. NBU appliances  are used for deduplication. What are the technologies?

Symantecs own deduplication technology (often referred to as Puredisk).

    > 3.Data domain is not an NBU appliance. What is it then?

Its a storage appliance (it acts as a storage server and storage pool to NBU), where as NBU appliances act both as Storage Server, Storage Pool, Media (and/or master server) at the same time. All in one.

    > 4.MSDP is NBU deduplication technology? It is also known as MSDP pure disk?

MSDP = Media Server Deduplication Pool, consider this the storage area, and PureDisk the Deduplication Technology. Both are used together in this setup.

    > 5.N52 * * THIS IS PURE DISK MSDP ?

Yes and No, the appliances come in 2 forms, 5xxx and 52xx.

The 5xxx is only storage, a bit like a Data Domain, it is more redundant and scaleable than the 52xx because you get more nodes in a cluster.

THe 52xx is both storage and Master or media server, but they are not redundant in any way.

    > 7.. MSDP and pure disk are OPEN storage?

No, Open Storage (OST plugin) is a way for NetBackup to communicate with 3rd party vendor storage, since MSDP is their own product, everything is handled internally with their own protocol.

The 3rd vendors are themselves responsible for adding new features to their product via OST, and they also have to wait for Symantec to add the feature to the OST API first. Thats why OST is usually behind 6-18 months technology wise with new NetBackup features.

  • Thanks  Morten Sir for the reply.

1..storage servers ,disk pool and disk volume are needed in any kind of technology i.e (data domian, pure disk,MSDP or appliances).???

2..For pure disk storage comes from SAN??

3 For appliances we just need to connect it through master/media servers and then create st server and disk pool. And then send data to that disk pool???correct???

4...appliances has predefined storage and in pure disk/MSDP ;storage comes from SAN team???

5...with appliances, there comes an OS also with it??

Yes (except that you could just mount a share from a data domain to a unix media server and create a regular Basic/Advanced disk area on it as well).

    > 2..For pure disk storage comes from SAN??

Internal disks, which come with the appliance. You are not allowed to add disk yourself, Symantec wants to control the performance.

For 5xxx yes. For 52xx they are also standard media server as I wrote earlier (so it is not required to have "external" media servers). But yes off course you can send data to the appliance both with or without deduplicating first.

    > 4...appliances has predefined storage and in pure disk/MSDP ;storage comes from SAN team???

Storage always come from the internal storage disk shelves.

The box come working out of the box, power on and answer 10 questions (network, naming, etc) and then its running!

They run Suse Linux, but its a black box appliance, so no need to run any UNIX commands, there is a command line and web interface to them. You can get into the unix shell if you want to, but only if you know what you are doing.
