File exist on the server, and it seems to be a device file.

[root@nbuclient:/dev]#
#-> ll | grep -i ttyrc

Previously there were arount 630 hung BPBKAR32 process were running, I had stopped them, now only one BPBKAR32 ran for the job I started.
Assistance would be much appreciated.
  • That's because you don't need to backup /dev files. They are recreated when you install the OS anyway so there is no point backing them up and they are character special files (not text or binary)

    set-up a /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list and add /dev to it - this will then skip trying to back them up.

    Also add /proc to your exclude_list too.

    Here is a useful Technote:

    Excluding files from backup. Addendum to VERITAS NetBackup System Administrator's Guide for UNIX and Linux, Volume 1

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH73478

    /dev/ is not mentioned here, but exclude it in your exclude_list file and re-run the backup

  • Thanks Revaroo,

    I tried to backup the client by excluding just /dev/ttyrc file, and yes the backup get successful too.

    But in other client as well the backup of /dev is being taken, and the error comes only with this specific client.
  • you have already selected IGNORE_XATTR,so it should ignore these errors and move forward..

    client version is only 6.5 or does it have any patch...pleaes upgrade to later than 6.5.0.3(preferally 7.X) to aviode this issue..

    exclude list also good ides..

  • Probably bpbkar and not bpbkar32, right?

    bpbkar is on Unix/Linux client.
    bpbkar32 on Windows.

    I am sure you know by now what my next question is going to be...
    WHY NBU 6.5 on the client?

    Try to add
    IGNORE_XATTR = YES
    to bp.conf on the client.

    And please exclude /dev from filesystem backups - there is no point in backing it up.
    Device files are automatically created during OS install and system reboot.

    Please also verify that OS patches are up to date on the client.
    We have seen that similar issues were fixed on HP-UX clients when OS patches were updated.

    *** EDIT ***
    OOPS! ignore my IGNORE_XATTR... already set!

    PLEASE upgrade NBU on this client, check that OS patches are up to date, and exclude /dev...

  • @Nagalla & Marianne,

    No Marianne, its showing as BPBKAR32 even its being unix server.

    #-> ./bpps
        root  4730     1  0 14:46:12 ?         0:00 bpbkar32 -r 8065700 -ru root -dt 0 -to 2700 -clnt nbuclient.xxx.com -class Unix-Temp -sched Weekly_Full -st FULL -bpstart_to 300

    The NBU upgrade is in progress all over the environment, will upgrade this once and when will get it in the list.
    But I'll suggest the client to let upgrade this server first.

    IGNORE_XATTR = Yes :: Added already in bp.conf. but no luck
    2/26/2014 12:15:29 PM - Warning bpbrm(pid=7048) from client nbuclient.xxx.com: WRN - NetBackup configuration flag IGNORE_XATTR set for backup operation.

    I'll suggest the client to exclude /dev filesystem as well.

    Need to check the OS patch with OS team.

  • I have had this issue before. See:

    http://www.mass.dk/netbackup/quick-hints/68-netbackup-client-hang-on-hp-ux-1131.html

    Fixed in NBU 6.5.5 or EEB (Etrack 1668477)
