Backup on External Portable Hard Disk

Hi friends.

We are using Symantec Netbackup 7.0.1 in our host server(Redhat linux). Currently we are taking backups on data tapes.

Is it possible to take backup of a particular folder onto a external portable hard disk using Symantec Netbackup console.?

  • You can do it but you need to bear in mind the implications if you remove it ...

    1. If it is missing the cataog will not be able to delete images when they expire causing catalog issues

    2. You will not be able to restore from it

But if you wanted to leave it there as a permanent feature then no problem  (apart from USB speed limitations)

    Hope this helps

(I have used external drives and even virtual drives as target on test systems)

  • Connect the drive to the server, create a supported filesystem on it. See File System Compatibility in the OS compatibility list.  Create a mountpoint and mount the drive.

Ensure that you can write to this mount point by creating some test files and deleting it.

To create a Disk Storage Unit is documented in NBU Admin Guide I.
Start with Chapter 10 - Configuring disk storage, then go on to chapter 11: Configuring storage units.
