Backup site

Hello everyone,

I’m setting up a backup site.  With below details

Total data to be backed up: 120 TB monthly  including full and incremental

Number of clients: 12

One master/media server: windows 2012. With two SAN connection to the switch

Tape library with 6 LTO4 dirves connectdd to the Switch

Backup will be done through network from clients

What is the suggested CPU/RAM requirement for the master/media server for  this environment?

Any comments or suggestion on the design ?

Thanks

  • It is never a good idea to attach 6 tape drives to a single server.
Very few servers can stream more than 3 or 4 tape drives at tape vendor's recommended speeds.

Another consideration is client and master/media server network connectivity - a sigle 1 Gb network card can at best receive data at 100MB/sec. That is barely sufficient to stream a single LTO4 tape drive.

Have a look at the 'featured discussion' at the top of the NetBackup forum page:

    Extract:

This manual is intended to provide guidance on questions such as the following: How big should the NetBackup master server be? How can the server be tuned for maximum performance? How many CPUs and disk or tape drives are needed? How to configure backups to run as fast as possible? How to improve recovery times? What tools can characterize or measure how NetBackup handles data?
