Best way to upgrade redhat 7,9 to 8.x on both netbackup master and media servers

Hi,

We need your advice regarding the best way to upgrade from redhat 7.9 to redhat 8.x on both Master and Media virtual servers.

We need this task to be done before the Netbackup update to 10.4 version.

We are running Netbackup 10.0.0.1 with rehdat 7.9 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.9 (Maipo))

Thanks!

  • To upgrade Red Hat 7.9 to 8.x on both NetBackup master and media servers, follow these detailed steps:

    Pre-Upgrade Steps

    1. Catalog Backup:

      • Take a catalog backup to ensure all backup data and configuration information is preserved. Use the NetBackup Administration Console to initiate a hot catalog backup and store it in a secure location, preferably on a separate storage device3.
    • Stop NetBackup Services:
      • Stop all running operations and NetBackup services on both the master and media servers.
      • On Unix/Linux systems:
        /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bp.kill_all
      • On Windows systems:
        install_path\netbackup\bin\bpdown -f
    • Environment Checks:

      • Perform environment checks with the SORT tool to ensure all operating system and security updates are applied2.

    • Disable Antivirus Software:
      • Disable antivirus software. If it cannot be disabled, exclude NetBackup files and folders from virus scan events2.
    • Stop Customized or Third-Party Scripts:

      • Stop all customized or third-party scripts that interact with NetBackup2.

    • Stop Applications Interacting with NetBackup:
      • Stop any applications on the system that interact with NetBackup, including databases or system components being backed up2.

    OS Upgrade Steps

    • Perform the OS Upgrade:
      • Follow the standard procedures provided by the OS vendor to upgrade the operating system on the master and media servers. Ensure you have the necessary OS installation media or upgrade files before starting the process3.
    • Verify OS Upgrade:

      • Once the OS upgrade is complete, verify that the new OS version is installed correctly on the master and media servers. Ensure all necessary drivers and updates are installed for the new OS version3.

    Post-Upgrade Steps

    • Start NetBackup Services:

      • Bring up the NetBackup services and perform some test operations to ensure the program is running as expected.
        • On Unix/Linux systems:
          /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bp.start_all
        • On Windows systems:
          install_path\netbackup\bin\bpup -f

    • Take Another Catalog Backup:
      • After the OS upgrade, take another backup of the NetBackup catalog to capture any changes or updates made during the OS upgrade process3.

By following these steps, you can ensure a smooth transition without impacting the NetBackup environment during the OS upgrade process. For any specific guidance related to your environment, consult the NetBackup documentation or contact Veritas support3.
