duplicating backup image from disk to tape

Hi,

I need to duplicate backup images from data domain to tape device through bpduplicate command. I am new to SLP's andduplication and would appreciate if someone can provide the syntax for the same.

  • If the image is under SLP control, as Marianne explains there is no need to duplicate manually, that is what SLP is for.

More to the point, if an image is under SLP control, it is not possible to duplicate manually, the system won't let you.

  • You could refer to How to copy backup images from one media to different when using the GUI. This would be the easier option.

The command line for bpduplicate is much longer and more detailed. You will need to understand copies, retention, backup ids,......

For the details on the command refer to the Symantec NetBackup 7.6 Commands Reference Guide (DOC6489):

    bpduplicate [-number_copies number] [-dstunit destination_storage_unit_label[,copy2,...]] [-dp destination_volume_pool_name[,copy2,...] [-p | -pb | -PD | -PM] [-Bidfile file_name] [-v] [-local] [-client name] [-st sched_type] [-sl sched_label] [-L output_file [-en]] [-shost source_host] [-policy name] [-s date] [-e date] [-pt policy_type] [-hoursago hours] [[-cn copy_number] | [-primary]] [-M master_server] [-altreadhost hostname] [-backupid backup_id] [-id media_id] [-rl retention_level[,rl-copy2,...]] [-fail_on_error 0|1[,...,0|1]] [-mpx] [-priority number] [-set_primary copy_index] [-bc_only] [-granular_proxy hostname] [-owner media_share_group[,copy2,...]]

  • No need to duplicate manually if you have configured SLPs.

Have you had a look yet at the screen to create SLP?
It is fairly self-explanatory - you specify the DD STU as backup destination and the tape STU as duplication destination.

You now select the SLP in the Policy instead of STU.

If you want different retentions for Daily, Weekly, Monthly, etc, create different SLP for each.
Select the relevant SLP in the Schedule.

    PS:
I have moved this discussion to the NetBackup forum as this is not a PureDisk query.

  • Thanks Martin, actually we wanted to manually duplicate the SLP images to tape because disk to disk duplication was not working due to bandwith issue in out Network. As you mentioned, Netbackup was not allowing us to duplicate them as they were under SLP control so we had to cancel the duplication operation through nbstlutil utility after which we were able to copy them to tape successfully. thanks all for your response.
