Enable Unrestricted Media Sharing

Hello Experts,

I need to know the pros and cons for Enable Unrestricted Media Sharing for all media servers. I have little bit idea that one media server wont write tape of other media server.

We have 2 media server and 1 tape library.

So if i enable Unrestricted media sharing for all media servers. What are the pros and cons for this option?

  • As long as both media severs are using same media type and are both carrying the same load you got a fine candidate for media sharing.

I can't recall any cons for using media sharing - but on the other side the win is not massive in a environment like yours. You will see a smaller number of partial full media. But hey - everything  that makes our days easier are gladly accepted :-D

You can always disable media sharing again if it troubles you...

  • Is this also true... ...if media sharing is enabled... ...and media server A has finished with a partially full tape in volume C, and within 180 seconds, media server B requests a tape in volume C, then media server B can simply take the drive and tape - I.e. NetBackup media manager determines there is no need to dismount a tape - and this speeds up the start of some jobs. True?
  • Media sharing alone will not do that. You need the shared storage options also (two media or more server bein able to access the same tape drives).

  • Yes, but SSO without unrestricted media sharing will always cause media to be dis-mounted, which might have otherwise been able to be shared?  True?

  • yes - I believe so.
