Host Base license compare with Terabytes (capacity base) license

Dears,

We have a big environment running NB 7.7.2, containing Oracle, Windows FS, Exchange, Unix FS, .. backups. We have been using host based license during last years and now have plan to upgrade it to 8.3 version.I have following questions:

1) Do we need to purchase new licenses for 8.3 (our current license worked with NB 7.0, 7.5 and 7.7)

2) If yes, which type of license is suitable for our big environment (daily 200 TB up to 300 TB, according to OPS Center report)? host based or Capacity?

3) I we continue with host based license, do we need smart meter? is smart meter related to capacity license only?

Thank you

    1) you only need to have active support. If you have you must login to Veritas support site and download the 8.3 lics.
    2) you will use the same type of license.
    3) yes. It is mandatory no mater the license type

    Hi support2015

It's not so simple - one thing capacity licensing gives you is an "all you can eat" license - so you can use any amount of any feature. With traditional licensing you are (by the terms of the license) limited to the type and number of each license component (e.g. enterprise server or database and application add-on). For reference the current product use rights document can be found here which lists all the license types and what is available etc.

    https://www.veritas.com/content/dam/Veritas/docs/eulas/NetBackup_v10_1_1_PUR_15Dec2022.pdf

Some of the features you may be missing out on are as follows (this is not an exhaustive list):

    • Data protection Optimzation Option (MSDP or third party deduplication)
    • Universal shares
    • DNAS option (dynamic NAS)
    • Support for various databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Hadoop and MongoDB
    • Support for various Cloud data protection (Cloudpoint, MSDP-C)

Also - here's a FAQ on licensing that may be helpful   https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/article.100038048 and here's one on how to interpret your existng license (the various FeatureID's are what are relevant)  https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/article.100016813

    Cheers

  • A per-TB license is easier for the customer (you) to understand. Almost all new licenses are per TB.

However, the general rule for thump is that if you have a large number of clients with a small amount of data, go with TB lic. Choose the legacy license if you have fewer clients with many TBs.
As you can understand, there is no easy way to go. You have to do your homework and compare the cost of both licenses.
The nbdeployutil utility will assist you in calculating and comparing both licenses using data from your installation.

Most customers do not want to do the license math and prefer to pay per TB. But I have two customers who had done the math and split netbackup into two domains (netbackup installations). As a result, they have one installation with many small clients using TB licenses and another with large clients using legacy licenses.

Well, as I tried my old legacy licenses (7.6), it works with NB 8.3. Can we continue with the old license? or maybe we will face the issue in backup-restores, after some time?

  • You can use the old license to install NetBackup up to 10.1, but the old license does not unlock any of the new licensed features from 7.7 and up. If you try to configure a new type of backup and it is not working, it may be the license.
All of your existing backups will continue to function normally. And the restore of curse.

FYI. From the next version, the license serial number will be changed to license file.
