Issue with standalone Drives

Hi All

We are currently implementing 40 remote media servers with internal standalone drives. We have an issue where when a new tape is inserted the new tape is not being updated in the drive via "Device Monitor" on the Master.

The new tape only becomes visible when i stop/restart the device manager service for the relevant media server via the master.

The OS version of the media servers and the master is Windows 2008 Std R2

Netbackup version 7.5.1

Thank you in advance

  • 40 remote media servers with standalone drives = 40 headaches!!!

Easiest way to manage Standalone drives and media is as follows:

Manually add the volumes that you need (A00001, A00002....) Choose correct media type/density that corresponds with the tape drive density and select a pool (e.g. NetBackup).
Add different ID range for each site.

You will need someone at remote site to do the following:

Stick paper-labels on each tape with media id.

Next, insert A00001 into the tape drive. Wait for green 'Ready' light.

    Label from CMD:
    bplabel -m A00001 -d hcart -o -p NetBackup -u 0

Please also have a look at this post where tape mount was not seen automatically. Problem solved with updated firmware: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/automount-tape-standalone-drive

    Good luck...............

  • I guess possible reasons are as below:

-- You not waiting enough to get the updates. --refreash the console.

--Tapes is already inside the drive, but NB will not show its media id until it is labeled. You should check if it is not showing media id, but showing drive status as READY "YES" it means that tape is there, just label it.

There is some procedure which I have created for the team. It may be useful for you.
