LTO 6 support

Hi All;

We are using IBM ULT3580-TD4 HCART3 tape drives in a library. We want to buy LTO6 drives. How do we choose the drive? Do we have to select the density HCART3? Can i read or write from/to our LTO4 tape cartridges using LTO6 drives? I am wondering about your suggestions.

Thanks in advanced.

Master Server: WindowsServer 2008 R2 Enterprise, 7.5.0.4

Appliances version: 2.5.1

  • LTO 6 drives are supported - see NBU 7 HCL: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76495

    Ensure that latest Device Mappings file is installed - see details in above HCL.

    NBU device config wizard will select hcart3 by default, but as per revaroo's post, you can choose anything you like. Only requirement is for media and drive densities to match.

    If your LTO4 media is configured as hcart and you want to use LTO6 to restore LTO4 media, you will need to configure at least one LTO6 as hcart to match the media density.

    See this TN for LTO/hcart density info: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH75821

  • The 'type' hcart hcart 2 hcart3 is a logical 'type' to drives and tapes. You could have LTO4 drives with 'type' as hcart or hcart3 - doesn't matter, as long as ou are consistent.

    The other questions are not NetBackup questions - speak to your vendor you are buying them from.

  • See the links to Device Mappings TechNotes in HCL (one for Windows and one for Unix/Linux).

    These TN's contain instructions and commands to verify Device Mappings version.
