Media is not getting unfreeze

I m working on 6.5.6 environment. There was a restore for a RMAN backup and the tape required was called from Iron Mountain.

I froze the tape yesterday so no other backup process shd be able to use it.

Today I started the restore but its was not getting successful. Then i remember that i need to unfreeze the media first.

I cancelled the restore and confirm with the DBA if its cancelled from their side too.

Now as i m trying to unfreeze it its saying media in use. Can any one help??????

  • See this TN for steps to release nbrb allocation: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126575

use 'nbrbutil -dump' to find MDS allocation, then 'nbrbutil -releaseMDS <MediaKey>'.

Just for the record NBU will not write to a frozen tape, but can still read from it. No need to unfreeze first.

Rather suspend media in future - backups will not be written to it, but will be normally recycled once all images have expired. Frozen tapes remain frozen, even when all images have expired.

  • 'nbrbutil -releaseMDS <MediaKey>' helped in releasing the media and the restore got completed.
