media server 7.6 → 8.1.1 upgrade

Hello, I am using NetBackup 7.6.1.2 version media server on AIX 7.1 server.

Master server recently improved (10.0.0.1)

You must upgrade to 8.1.1 which supports Media Server.

Currently, /tmp has 3.9G free space,

Upgrade failed.

/usr currently has about 2.8G free space and disk expansion is not possible.

How to proceed with the upgrade would be helpful?

What roles does the media server perform (basic disk/tape/MSDP)? If tape only you should be able to uninstall NetBackup and reinstall using the same server name (although you may still be in trouble on the sapce front).

Is there anywhere on the server with some free space?

Have you cleared NetBackup logs to reduce space there?

You may be able to mount a NFS volume to the server and use that for the temp location during the install (use the NB_TMPDIR env variable - see this post from a few years back which is still valid https://vox.veritas.com/t5/NetBackup/remote-upgrade-not-enough-space/td-p/815763 ).

    Cheers

As an aside, you may want to consider replacing the AIX media server with a newer server running Linux (RHEL/Oracle Linux/SUSe). AIX is a dead end as far as media server support is concerned (it will not be possible to upgrade beyond 8.1.1). The support cost for the AIX server may also be similar to the replacement cost for a new server. Of course you may have reasons for keeping an AIX media server.

    Cheers

  • What role does a media server play?

→ The role of the media server is Tape (PTL/VTL).

If you only have tape, you can uninstall NetBackup and use the same server name upwards again.

    → Reinstallation is not possible.

Are servers with free space common?

    →No.

Have you deleted the NetBackup logs to free up space internally?

→ Backup log and shrink file deletion operations.

The capacity of the current /usr area is reduced.

    /tmp is free.
