NBU license question

I want to ask a questioni, about NBU license. my customer has 1 master server(linux 7.5.0.5), 2 media servers, 10 file servers, 7 oracle databases servers, 2 MSSQL servers. 3 EXSi servers. 2 tape library(16 tape drivers). 16 tape drivers shared between the 1master servers and 2 media servers.

so need to :

SYMC NETBACKUP CLIENT APPLICATION AND DATABASE PACK 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 3 STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S

 Qty=9 (7 oracle databases servers, 2 MSSQL servers)

SYMC NETBACKUP OPTION LIBRARY BASED TAPE DRIVE 7.5 XPLAT PER DRIVE STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S

Qty=2 (2 tape library)

SYMC NETBACKUP OPTION SHARED STORAGE OPTION 7.5 XPLAT 1 DRIVE STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S

Qty=16 (16 tape drivers)

SYMC NETBACKUP ENTERPRISE CLIENT 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 3 STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S

Qty=3 (3 EXSi servers)

Their number is right?

  • You are missing the standard client for the 10 file servers, 7 Linux, and 2 MS Windows, that is if your Oracle server is running on Linux. For database servers the license is needed to backup the file system and a different one for the database on a database server. As Adonis pointed out the Tiering is based on how many CPU the all the machines have. For instance in your example the Tier 3 license covers 4 - 7 sockets on a Windows box and 5 - 12 sockets on a Linux / Unix box.

  • Hi lelei,

    Can you please verify with your customer the following:

    • are the file servers, Oracle database servers and MS SQL servers are installed as a Physical Server or as a Guest Server?
    • please confirm if 16 Tape Drivers are realy Tape Drives or just Tape slots with-in the Tape Library

    Please also take note that NBU are licensed per CPU (Tier Level)

  • Thank you  Adonis Manansala and Andrew Madsen, all servers are physical.  Tape Drivers are realy Tape Drives with-in the Tape Library. One tape library has eight tape drivers, the other one has eight tape drivers too.

    The Linux server has 5-12 sockets. The Windows server too.

    That these License can use?

  • Hi lelei,

    Based on the above servers you provided, below is the initial BOM.

    • 3 units NBU Server Tier ? (please verify the number of cores for tiering purposes)  + maintenance = 1 unit for master server and 2 units for media server
    • 16 units NBU Option Library Tape Drive + maintenance = For the tape drives
    • 16 units NBU option Shared Storage + maintenance = for each tape drives that is shared
    • 10 units NBU Standard Client Tier 3 + Maintenance = For the File Servers
    • 3 units NBU Enterprise Client + maintenance = license for the 3 exsi Host Server
    • 7 units NBU Standard Client Linux Tier 3 + maintenance = NBU Client license for the 7 Oracle Server
    • 7 units NBU Application and Database Pack + maintenance = licenses for 7 Oracle database
    • 2 units NBU Standard Client windows Tier 3 + Maintenance = NBU Client license for the 2 Windows Server
    • 2 units NBU Application and Database pack tier 3 + maintenance = for the MS SQL Database

    To come-up with the proper licenses, you can contact your reseller or you may refer to Symantec Customer Care, they are the ones who handle licenses.

    Regards,

    Adonis

  • I am wondering if you are working for a Symantec reseller? Seeing that you are referring to your customer. .. All Symantec resellers/partners have access to the NetBackup licensing guide on PartnerNet. On a side note - 16 tape drives are way too many for the small amount of media servers. Most servers will battle to keep more than 2 drives streaming. Best to get hold of expert partner who can assist with proper design.
  • Thank you  Adonis Manansala and Marianne.

    I import a "SYMC NETBACKUP CLIENT APPLICATION AND DATABASE PACK 7.5 WIN/LNX/SOLX64 1 SERVER TIER 3 STD LIC EXPRESS BAND S" license, but I can implementation of the all physical database servers backup. Is this normal?

  • Yes. Application and Database license are for all supported DBs and Applications. Again - if you are working for a Symantec reseller, you can download the Licensing Guide from PartnerNet. If not, you can ask your Symantec partner for the customer version of the Licensing Guide.
